Please ask for further details. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSince her emergence on the British jazz scene in the mid 90s pianist Nikki Yeoh has proved to be an improviser\, composer and all-round adventurer who has continually sought to broaden her musical horizons. She has led her own bands in prestigious venues such as the  Royal Festival Hall and performed with hip-hop producers like DJ Pogo at more informal spaces such as the Jazz Café. She has been part of a brilliant duo with the vocalist Cleveland Watkiss and also worked with choral ensembles. In other words Yeoh is a creative free spirit who\, although deeply rooted in the language of improvisation\, is open to a range of music that leans as much to populism as it does high art. \nIndeed it was a tour with the maverick pop vocalist Neneh Cherry that led Yeoh to form her first significant group\, as she clicked musically with two other members of the singer’s backing band\, the bass guitarist Michael Mondesir and drummer Keith Le Blanc\, noted for his work for the pioneering hip-hop label Sugar Hill. \nAfter making its debut at the Jazz Café in 1994 the trio\, which Yeoh called Infinitum\, toured as part of a double bill with Django Bates’ Human Chain\, and Michael’s brother Mark eventually took over the drum chair as the group did more international work\, a highlight of which was a trip to Cuba for a collaboration with Conjunto Folklorico Nacional De Cuba. \nThose who have seen Yeoh in any one of the aforementioned settings will testify to her virtuosity on the keyboard. Drawing on pioneers from the worlds of jazz\, classical music and soul\, above all the likes of Herbie Hancock\, Alexander Scriabin and Stevie Wonder\, Yeoh has developed a style that can move from explosive rhythmic energy to understated lyricism at a moment’s notice. Indeed her ability to conjure up the most vividly evocative of moods by way of subtle\, probing harmony\, either in a duo\, as with vocalist Watkiss\, or in the demanding context of solo piano\, has been proven time and again. \nAccomplished soloist as she is\, Yeoh has also excelled as a composer over the years and this is borne out by the number of very significant commissions she has to her name. Among the most notable recent works is a Suite Of Seven Tunes\, based on the seven deadly sins\, for the internationally renowned reeds virtuoso\, John Surman. This was premiered at the 2010 Cheltenham International Jazz Festival. Prior to that\, in 2006\, Yeoh presented River Spirit\, which was written for The Oxford New College Boys Choir following a commission from Oxford Contemporary Music. These two compositions were testimony to the wealth of ideas that she has generated since the early stages of her career\, and the impression she made with Infinitum Plus\, a work for a 12-piece ensemble\, was considerable to say the least. It could not have been a clearer sign of the composer’s ambition and unpredictability\, so it was characteristic of Yeoh to subsequently head in an entirely different direction\, writing three pieces for classical piano virtuoso Joanna MacGregor\, Be-Bop\, Entwined and Flora And Fauna\, that were featured on the album Piano Language. \nYeoh’s output to date reflects an irrepressible spirit of curiosity that has taken her into areas far and wide\, be it gigs with cutting edge jazz musicians such as Steve Williamson and Courtney Pine\, soul stars like Jean Carne and Roy Ayers\, or the fiercely original hip-hop group The Roots. Regardless of the setting Yeoh always shows the same degree of dynamism and responsiveness\, qualities that she has developed through both her personal research of the history of music and extensive travels in Latin America\, India\, the Far East and Europe. \nNikki Yeoh is at the peak of her artistic powers. To her experience as a player has been added substantial life experience\, above all the joy of being both a teacher and mother. DESCRIPTION:This autumn\, we are delighted to welcome back concert pianist\, keynote speaker\, educator and author of best-selling books The Perfect Wrong Note (2003) and Eros at the Piano (2023) William Westney to Finchcocks. \nAdvanced pianists will have the great priviledge of learning from US-based piano pedagogue\, spending five days focussed on confidence and freedom within piano performance. Below\, he describes his plan for the Finchcocks 2026 autumn school course for Advanced pianists (beyond grade 8\, preparing for – or at – diploma standard\, or higher). \nOur 5-day courses are a well established highlight of the Finchcocks calendar. SUMMARY:Keyboard Music from the Baroque with Steven Devine - mixed ability
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to be offering a course with brilliantly talented keyboard player and Early Keyboard Consultant to the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and Royal Welsh Colleges\, Steven Devine. \nDuring this weekend course Keyboard Music from the Baroque\, Steven Devine will explore this incredibly fertile period of keyboard music\, looking at style\, technique\, repertoire and instruments. Although intended for pianists – teaching will be delivered on our Steinway and other beautiful grand pianos – a harpsichord will be in residence for the duration of the course so that guests can explore what these instruments can reveal in our interpretation. \nThis mixed ability course is suitable for pianists playing at an intermediate to advanced level. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs well as a one-to-one lesson with Steven\, weekend tuition will include two workshops and the chance to play in and observe two performance masterclasses also. Themes to be explored are: \n\nBaroque Music – a question of style: Bring your Baroque repertoire to life through an understanding of articulation\, ornamentation\, rhythm\, phrasing\, and historical context. Participants will consider how stylistic choices influence sound and interpretation\, with practical demonstrations on both piano and  and discussion applicable to composers such as Bach\, Handel\, and Scarlatti.\nThere’s not only Bach…: Broaden your Baroque horizons by exploring the rich variety of composers and styles from across Europe. Please ask for further details. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSteven Devine enjoys a busy career as a music director and keyboard player working with some of the finest musicians. \nHe is the Principal Keyboard Player with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and also the principal keyboard player for The Gonzaga Band\, The Mozartists and performs regularly with many other groups around Europe. He has recorded over thirty discs with other artists and ensembles and made six solo recordings. His recording of Bach’s Goldberg Variations (Chandos Records) has received critical acclaim – including Gramophone magazine describing it as “among the best”. The complete harpsichord works of Rameau (Resonus) has received five-star reviews from BBC Music Magazine. Steven has recently released  Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier (“it’s the one of all I’ve heard in the past ten years that I am happiest to live with.” Early Music Review)  – available on this site. \nHe made his London conducting debut in 2002 at the Royal Albert Hall and is now a regular performer there – including making his Proms directing debut in August 2007 with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. He has conducted the Mozart Festival Orchestra in every major concert hall in the UK and also across Switzerland. Steven is Music Director for New Chamber Opera in Oxford and with them has performed repertoire from Cavalli to Rossini. For the Dartington Festival Opera he has conducted Handel’s Orlando and Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas. And for those who would like\, our tutor will give one-to-one lessons on our new Steinway to provide individual pointers and tips. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis January we welcome back concert pianist\, composer and arranger Beatrice Nicholas. Beatrice is a fantastic pianist\, with a warm\, encouraging approach to teaching – and a wealth of knowledge to back it up! \nBeatrice will be on hand for two optional one-to-one lessons over the course of the weekend. Both Saturday and Sunday will also begin with an optional group session on warm ups\, practice tips and a Q&A. You may however plan to structure your weekend differently (with a long lie-in and breakfast in bed!). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn the Saturday night\, Beatrice will perform a private recital of her current repertoire for retreat guests\, which is an opportunity to relax and be inspired with a glass of wine in the magical setting of the main hall of Finchcocks. \n\n\nWe have one grand piano available for every guest in our vaulted cellars\, including our new Steinway. Piano conversation will flow freely over coffee and home made biscuits and cakes in between bouts of practice! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe piano retreat is arranged around food. There’s no strict timetable or deadlines (although you can see a past schedule here). This workshop explores how changing musical styles\, aesthetics and instruments shaped the way composers imagined sound. Through demonstrations and discussion\, we will examine how touch\, articulation\, pedalling\, phrasing and tone production evolve across different periods\, and how knowledge of historical context can enrich modern performance. \nThe Musical Doctor  \n(Solving Technical Problems Through Musical Means)  \nMany technical difficulties arise not from the fingers but from an unclear musical intention. In this interactive workshop\, participants are invited to bring passages that have long frustrated them; awkward runs\, leaps\, voicing challenges\, memory slips\, tension\, unevenness or other recurring problems. Together we will diagnose these issues and explore solutions that begin with the music itself rather than purely mechanical exercises. By connecting technique to imagination\, character and musical purpose\, we will discover how artistic clarity can often unlock technical freedom and transform both practice and performance. \nTwo additional performance classes will give participants the opportunity to apply these insights in a supportive and inspiring setting. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAfter these\, time will be spent in private practice\, one-to-one tuition with Pavel – or an open lesson performance class in our Steinway recital room. Revolution\n\nMusic by Tchaikovsky\, Rachmaninoff\, Mussorgsky\, Scriabin & Prokofiev\n\nIn St Petersburg\, the self-taught composers of the Mighty Handful rejected western academic training\, seeking a new\, distinctly Russian voice – rooted in folklore\, speech\, and exoticism of the empire. Mussorgsky pushed music toward raw realism\, bending the conventions of harmony and form to mirror the rhythms of language itself. \nIn Moscow\, the Conservatory fostered a more cosmopolitan ideal. Below\, Florian describes his plan for group sessions\, helping guests to clarify\, polish and gain performance experience and confidence in works they are preparing – and of course better understand the “Devil’s Pianist” and how to play his music. \nThis course is aimed at those beyond grade 8\, preparing for – or at – diploma standard\, or higher. \n\n\nFor many pianists\, Franz Liszt stands like a mountain on the horizon: awe-inspiring and intimidating. Yet behind the legend lies a composer of extraordinary imagination\, humanity\, spirituality\, wit\, and charm whose music is far more accessible than its reputation suggests. This course invites you to step beyond the myths and discover a Liszt you can understand\, enjoy\, and ultimately\, play with great pleasure. \nThrough a combination of group workshops\, private lessons\, performance classes\, guided listening\, and discussion\, participants will explore carefully chosen works spanning the breadth of Liszt’s output\, from intimate poetic miniatures to deeply spiritual masterpieces. Along the way\, we will encounter one of history’s greatest musicians\, a most fascinating personality who was a visionary artist\, a celebrity virtuoso\, a philanthropist\, a teacher\, a thinker\, and a Franciscan. Workshop topics will include: \n\n\nThe Secret Workshop: Liszt’s Lost Technical Exercises \nWhat if you could sit at the piano and work from the exercises Liszt himself used with his students? In this workshop\, we will explore the remarkable collection of technical exercises that Liszt never published during his lifetime. Collected and later published by one of his pupils after his death\, these extraordinary studies offer a rare glimpse into the workshop of the greatest piano teacher of the 19th century. Together we will examine some of the exercises\, discuss the technical and musical principles hidden within them\, and discover how they can transform our own playing. Participants will then head to the practice rooms to experiment with specific tasks before regrouping to share and compare results\, and draw conclusions. This is an opportunity to learn directly from Liszt’s pedagogical legacy. \n\n\nBeyond the Rhapsodies: The Hidden Worlds of Liszt \nThere is far more to Liszt than dazzling virtuosity and thundering Hungarian Rhapsodies. This workshop explores the astonishing diversity of Liszt’s piano music\, focusing particularly on works that reveal his introspective\, spiritual\, poetic\, and deeply personal side. We will examine a range of accessible and rewarding repertoire that challenges many assumptions about the composer\, from meditative religious works to pieces of profound emotional depth or simplicity. Along the way we will consider Liszt’s identity as a committed Franciscan Catholic and ask whether history may have misunderstood him. Was he really the flamboyant showman\, or was that perhaps only one\, overblown aspect of a far more complex figure? Through discussion\, score study\, listening\, and practical exploration at the piano\, participants will encounter a composer whose inner world may prove even more fascinating than his public image. \nSelected pieces of one to two pages in length will be distributed in advance and should be prepared before the course. These pieces will form the basis of our practical work and discussion during this workshop.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs usual\, everyone will have access to their own grand piano for the weekend – including our new Steinway – and have plenty of time to practise in our vaulted piano cellar. DESCRIPTION:The nineteenth century’s great pianist-composers formed a remarkably interconnected musical world. As colleagues\, rivals\, champions and critics\, figures such as Liszt\, Chopin\, Henselt and their contemporaries shaped one another’s artistic development\, exchanging ideas through performance\, teaching\, composition and personal friendship. Drawing on current research\, this course explores some of the relationships\, influences and musical connections that helped define the golden age of piano playing. \nLed by concert pianist and research associate of 19th century piano performance at the University of York\, Daniel Grimwood\, will offer insight into the Romantic Community and its relevance to the modern performer playing romantic repertoire today. \nAs broad the repertoire\, so the ability required to play it! This course suits anyone from Upper Intermediate level through to Diploma+. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBoth Satuday and Sunday begin with an interactive workshop\, led by Daniel:\n\n\nWorkshop 1: Clementi\, Kalkbrenner\, Thalberg – Some Methods Explored\nThe nineteenth century inherited a rich tradition of piano pedagogy\, much of it preserved in influential methods and teaching collections. Inspired by his research at the University of York\, Daniel will consider the work of figures such as Clementi\, Kalkbrenner and Thalberg – and to explore aspects of the technical and musical ideals they sought to cultivate and the impact these approaches had on generations of pianists.\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshop 2: Henselt and Russia\nAdolf von Henselt was one of the most influential yet overlooked pianist-composers of the nineteenth century. After settling in Russia\, he played a formative role in shaping the Russian piano school\, leaving a legacy that extended through generations of pianists and composers. His training continued with Graham Fitch at the Purcell School\, where he also studied violin\, viola and composition\, giving him a broad appreciation of classical music\, and later with Vladimir Ovchinnikov and Peter Feuchtwanger. \nDaniel is a passionate about all keyboard instruments old and new\, and has given a recital of Chopin’s Etudes on the composer’s own Pleyel piano. \nHis discs of Liszt and Chopin\, performed on an 1851 Erard piano\, received a unanimous chorus of praise from the press; the Liszt album was Daily Telegraph CD of the week and Editor’s Choice in Gramophone Magazine. He was the first artist to record on the Edition Peters Sounds label\, the complete Fauré Nocturnes album was released to excellent reception in The Sunday Times\, which was followed by a disc of solo piano works by Adolph von Henselt\, described as “a blizzard of dazzling pianism” by the Observer. Below\, Florian describes his plan for group sessions\, helping guests to get the most out of time at the piano in today’s busy\, modern life. \nThis course is aimed at around grade 7 and beyond. \n\n\nModern life is busy. Careers\, families\, responsibilities\, travel\, and endless demands on our time often leave pianists feeling frustrated by the gap between their musical ambitions and the hours available to achieve them. Yet meaningful progress is not reserved for those who can practise four or five hours a day. This three-day course is designed for upper intermediate and advanced pianists who want to make every minute at the keyboard count. \nThrough workshops\, performance classes\, private lessons\, demonstrations\, and discussion\, we will explore how to learn more efficiently\, practise more creatively\, and build a sustainable approach to long-term improvement. Participants will discover strategies used by professional musicians to accelerate learning\, solve technical problems\, and maintain progress even during the busiest periods of life. \nBy the end of the course\, participants will have developed a more structured and efficient approach to practice; learned how to organise and prioritise their musical goals; gained tools for learning new repertoire more quickly and securely; improved their ability to identify and solve technical and musical problems independently; developed greater confidence in preparing performances and examinations; and created a personalised practice framework that can fit realistically into even the busiest schedule. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPreparation \nNo specific preparation is required. Participants are encouraged to bring one or two pieces they are currently studying\, particularly works that present challenges in learning\, memorisation\, technique\, interpretation\, or performance. These pieces may provide useful material for discussion during lessons\, performance classes\, and workshops. The course is designed to focus on practical strategies rather than specific repertoire\, ensuring that every participant can immediately apply the ideas explored to their own musical projects. \nFormal tuition takes place in interactive workshops\, performance classes and one-to-one lessons. Workshop topics will include: \n\n\nWorkshop I – Learn faster: creative practising \nHow do great pianists learn so much music so quickly? Experience does play a role\, but there is also method. This practical workshop explores the process of learning a new piece from the very first reading through to confident performance. Together we will examine proven strategies for decoding scores\, identifying challenges\, building secure technique\, and avoiding the common traps that waste valuable practice time. Participants will be given short\, unfamiliar pieces and practical tasks before heading to the practice rooms to experiment with different learning methods. On returning\, we will compare results\, discuss discoveries\, and identify which approaches produced the most effective outcomes. This workshop is about learning how to learn. \n\n\nWorkshop II – Maximum reward\, minimum hours: choosing repertoire wisely \nNot every masterpiece requires six months of preparation. One of the most important yet overlooked skills for pianists is choosing repertoire wisely. This workshop explores a wealth of rewarding music that delivers artistic satisfaction without demanding endless practice hours. We will examine repertoire choices for advanced amateurs\, discuss how to balance ambition with practicality\, and consider how thoughtful programming can accelerate musical development. We will also look at pathways towards performance goals such as Grades 7-8 and Diploma examinations\, discussing how repertoire can be selected strategically to maximise progress\, enjoyment\, and success. \n\n\nWorkshop III – Ask Anything. A piano problem-solving clinic \nEvery pianist faces obstacles. Some are technical. Some are musical. Some are organisational. Most are surprisingly common. This open clinic provides an opportunity for participants to bring their questions\, challenges\, frustrations\, and curiosities for collective discussion. Topics might include technical difficulties\, memorisation\, performance anxiety\, motivation\, examination preparation\, injury prevention\, repertoire choices\, interpretation\, practice planning\, or balancing piano study with professional and family life. Through demonstrations\, discussion\, and practical examples at the piano\, we will work together to find solutions and create a shared toolbox of ideas that every participant can take home. DESCRIPTION:Feeling at Home at the Piano is designed for Lower Intermediate adult pianists who would like to feel more relaxed\, confident and expressive at the keyboard. \n\n\nOver three days we’ll explore practical ways to develop greater ease in our playing -whether that’s performing for others\, making musical choices\, or simply feeling less tied to the printed page. \n\nAnd we’ll also have plenty of fun! Through a mixture of group workshops\, individual lessons\, informal performances and plenty of time to practise\, we’ll discover approaches that help playing feel more natural\, enjoyable and creative.\nThe course isn’t about perfection. It’s about building confidence\, understanding the music more deeply\, and developing the skills that allow you to play with greater freedom and enjoyment\, whatever repertoire you love.\nOur 3-day course for Lower Intermediate pianists is designed to allow a bit more space to take things at slower pace and in more depth. Aimed at pianists around grades 2-4 playing level\, the course is led by our Music Director and author of There’s more to playing piano David Hall. Guests can expect his signature inspiration alongside an encouraging and flexible teaching style. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDuring your stay\, David will cover the following topics in his interactive workshops: \nWorkshop 1\nPractice that works!\n\nMany adult pianists feel perfectly capable in the practice room\, only to find that everything changes when someone else is listening\, even their own teacher. In this workshop\, we’ll explore practice techniques that develop security and confidence\, how to recover promptly from slip-ups\, and how to keep our minds focused on the music itself.\nWe’ll also think about what teachers and examiners are actually listening out for in our performance – note accuracy\, yes\, but also rhythm\, shaping\, phrasing and tone-quality.\n\n\nWorkshop 2\nMaking Music: Melody\, Choices & Creativity\nMusic comes alive when we move beyond simply playing the notes. In this interactive workshop we’ll explore phrasing\, shaping melodies\, listening more deeply\, and making thoughtful musical decisions. Through simple creative activities – including experimenting with harmony\, accompaniment patterns and playing by ear – you’ll discover practical ways to become a more expressive and imaginative musician\, whatever style you enjoy.\n\nWorkshop 3\nHarmonic Building Blocks: Chords\, Patterns & Playing by Ear\nUnderstanding a little harmony can transform the way you learn\, remember and enjoy music. This workshop introduces the essential building blocks behind many pieces: simple chords\, common chord progressions  and accompaniment patterns. We’ll explore how these ideas can help you recognise musical patterns\, play by ear\, add simple accompaniments to melodies and feel more confident away from the printed score. No previous theory knowledge is required!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAfternoons are spent in an informal performance class where guests play to each other in an encouraging “open-lesson” format – learning from each others’ challenges and gaining performance experience along the way. \nThere will also be time for private practice on one of our beautiful grand pianos. SUMMARY:Classical Compare & Contrast weekend with Nicholas Walker - mixed ability
DESCRIPTION:We’re delighted to welcome back concert pianist and Royal Academy lecturer Nicholas Walker to share his extensive knowledge of the classical era during this mixed ability weekend course. \nAcclaimed as a “prodigy… of exceptional artistry” (Evening Standard)\, Nicholas is renowned for his virtuosic flair and sensitive musicianship – which he generously shares with Finchcocks guests during this weekend course! \nThe classical period (~1750-1820) gave pianists in particular a vast repertoire of beautiful music\, much of it well within the reach of the amateur\, but not at the expense of depth of meaning and feeling. Even when a player finds the more technically challenging works difficult\, the musical experience is nevertheless thrilling. \nThe classical style has its roots in opera\, particularly comic opera\, and many writers of comic operas also wrote for the keyboard\, such as Galuppi\, Paisello\, Cimarosa\, Johann Christian Bach and Georg Benda\, to name a few; their works are well worth exploring. Mozart’s greatest music is to be found\, arguably\, in his operas\, but opera permeates all his other works in the way themes are structured and juxtaposed\, and the feeling (Affekt in German) in Mozart is particularly human and often vulnerable; Mozart’s handling of vulnerability is without peer. \nThere is another strand in classical music\, which has its roots partly in C. P. E. Bach and partly in galant instrumental writing (concerto grosso and the trio sonata) and one can see these influences in Haydn\, J. C. Bach\, Hummel\, Daniel Gottlob Türk and others. Haydn also wrote operas but\, beautiful though they are\, his finest works are to be found elsewhere\, including his piano sonatas\, which display an astonishing range of invention\, wit and pathos. Haydn and Beethoven have a great deal in common. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOne should also take into account the contribution of what Nicholas Temperley called “The London Piano School” (he published 20 volumes of this music)\, now out of print\, but many of the composers he writes about can be found on IMSLP. There is some really fine music in this genre by Clementi\, Cramer\, George Pinto\, Cipriani Potter\, Philip Cogan\, who also wrote operas\, and of course\, Dussek. Beethoven was definitely influenced by Clementi and Dussek\, and greatly admired Cramer. This is music well worth seeking out\, as are the composers on whose works Beethoven wrote variations; not all of them left a body of keyboard music\, but André Grétry\, the composer of many operas\, left a manual of improvisation. \nPreparation \nYou are of course welcome to bring music by Haydn\, Mozart\, Beethoven and Schubert\, but it’s well worth having a look at some of the music mentioned above\, as knowledge of other composers of the period enhances your understanding of the more famous works. \nNicholas would highly recommend Türk’s “Sixty pieces for aspiring players” books 1 and 2\, published by the ABRSM. This book is a manual in classical taste\, feeling\, style and ornamentation\, and the book illuminates the meaning of gestures and figuration common to all classical composers. None of the pieces are difficult\, but every page is a joy\, full of intelligence and wit. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Classical Compare & Constrast weekend will follow our usual format\, incorporating an interactive workshop on both Saturday and Sunday mornings and will include: \nWorkshop 1: The sound \nThe piano changed so much during the 18th century\, and it is only with the invention of Samual érard’s double escapement action 1820 that something like the modern grand piano begins to \nemerge. What we know as the modern grand only really dates from the early to mid-1870s\, and is a very different instrument from the pianos that Mozart\, Haydn and Beethoven knew. This workshop explores how to use all the resources of the modern piano to create a sound world that is faithful to the composer’s intentions. \nThere is also the question of articulation: how “chopped up” should the sound be? Beethoven thought Mozart’s playing was too non-legato\, so one can appreciate that not all composers require the same approach. \nParticipants are invited to bring any examples of repertoire\, even if just a phrase or two\, to the session and share their experiences with all. \nWorkshop 2: Ornamentation \nOrnamentation also changed a great deal during the 18th century\, and it varies according to composer\, region\, and period. Why does music have ornamentation? What is being ornamented? How fast does the ornament need to be? These are just some questions that arise\, and no doubt participants will have lots more. Bring along your most vexations ornaments! \nRelated to this is the question of improvisation\, about which C. P. E. Bach wrote a chapter in his famous book\, “Essay on the True Art of Playing Keyboard Instruments”\, in which he shows that improvisation starts with the ornamentation of simple harmonic progressions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAfter these\, time will be spent in private practice\, one-to-one tuition with Nicholas – or an open lesson performance class in our Steinway recital room. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe highlight of a weekend course is often our Saturday evening tutor recital-talk in the house’s main hall. Nicholas will present and play some of his classical repertoire\, including Mozart’s A minor Rondo. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn this weekend course\, guests will: \n\nHave the chance to play in and observe two performance masterclasses.\nWill receive a one-to-one lesson with Nicholas.\nEnjoy access to play on our 9 grand pianos anytime between 7am and 8pm. DESCRIPTION:In this anniversary year marking 200 years since his death\, this course engages with piano works that have come about as a response to Beethoven’s legacy.  \nBeethoven changed the musical landscape in a way that no other composer could have done before him. The Romantic era nourished itself on the myth that Beethoven’s genius towered above all others\, and the Romantics staked their values in the enigmatic claim that Beethoven’s spirit would be reborn in a worthy successor.  \nNevertheless\, nineteenth century composers still found – and continue to find – themselves setting down their paths under the shadow of Beethoven’s reputation and stature. Performers too have grappled with this legacy by questioning themselves whether they can be being considered worthy enough to play the weight of Beethoven’s music: from the celestial radiance and intimate profundity of the late works that arose from his deafness\, the heroic voice of freedom\, to the wit\, virtuosity and innovative craft. \nThis course encourages the exploration of lesser-known figures such as: \n\nDorothea von Ertmann\, one of Beethoven’s most impactful students\nLouise Farrenc\, a champion of Beethoven’s late piano sonatas\nMarie Jaël\, the first pianist to perform all Beethoven’s sonatas in Paris\nEmilie Mayer\, who earned the nickname of the ‘Female Beethoven’\nor the more-known Fanny Hensel (nee Mendelssohn)\, Clara Schumann\, and Ethel Smyth.\n\nRobert Schumann\, Franz Liszt\, Johannes Brahms\, Hans von Bülow\, Anton Rubinstein\, Alexander Siloti\, Sergei Taneyev\, Leos Janáček\, Edward Elgar\, Dmitri Shostakovich are inconceivable without reference to Beethoven. And even those who had a difficult relationship with Beethoven – such as Franz Schubert\, Fryderyk Chopin\, and Claude Debussy – still had to grapple with his titanic legacy. \nBy the end of the course participant will have a deeper appreciation of the reasons why the legend behind Beethoven gave rise to so much awe-inspiring creativity\, and tested the resolve and imagination of so many generations of pianists. Participants will come away with new repertoire ideas\, and develop efficient approaches to technique and practice to unlock the story-telling and character of those works. Musical examples and excerpts of composers\, as well as a glimpse into the lives of pianists trying to make their careers as performers\, will be explored in the context of their lives and times.Workshop 2: \nAfter Beethoven: Wrestling with Gods  \nThis session looks at the other end of the spectrum\, at the pianists and composers whose creativity was sparked by the desire to become the anti-Beethoven. This is still an important part of Beethoven’s legacy\, albeit in reverse. What did that mean in actual pianist terms? Does their inner world and struggle with being born after Beethoven open new directions\, or place them on the direct path back towards him? \n\nAfternoons are spent exploring and enjoying each other’s repertoire\, applying new gained knowledge\, and confidence\, in performance classes – as well as some private practice! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn between the workshop and performance class sessions\, there will be time for private practice on one of our beautiful grand pianos. Participants will discover how efficient breathing can improve coordination\, timing and freedom of movement\, making technical challenges such as wide stretches\, jumps\, chord playing and rapid passagework feel more natural and secure. SUMMARY:5-day Upper Intermediate Summer School "The Practice Toolbox" with Graham Fitch
DESCRIPTION:Upper Intermediate players have the fantastic opportunity to study with the wonderfully inspiring Graham Fitch for five whole days on this summer school! \nIn our ‘practice toolbox’ we develop and sharpen over time a range of specific activities we use during our daily practice – to learn notes deeply and thoroughly\, improve weak spots\, finesse a piece\, and to feel confident in our ability to play in front of others. Many piano lessons focus on musical coaching\, but this does not always equip us to know how to practise when we are alone. In this course\, we will explore a range of practice tools via workshop demonstrations followed by brief breakout sessions. \nThis summer piano retreat offers pianists confident grade 6 – approaching 8 the chance to fully emerse themselves in all that Finchcocks has to offer. The course aims to provide a luxury break away\, the chance to practise on our 9 grand pianos without any distraction\, challenge guests with new techniques and explore their own playing under the expert supervision of Graham Fitch. \nOur 5-day summer schools are a well established highlight of the Finchcocks calendar. To ensure a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere\, places are open to those who have attended at least one weekend Finchcocks course previously. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLike our weekend courses\, formal tuition takes place in workshops\, performance classes and one-to-one lessons. \nThis year’s interactive workshop focuses will be: \n1. The Three S’s: Slowly\, Separately\, Sections \nThink of The Three S’s as the rudiments of effective practice from the beginner to advanced levels. Slow\, deliberate practice needs to be enjoyable to be meaningful and used at the right stages of our practice. We will look at how to do this well. “Separately” does not refer only to practising each hand alone but to “separate out” the various strands in a piece of music. “Sections” need to be the right length depending on the learning stage we’re at: we will look at how to divide a piece into bigger sections and how to work at the atomic level in much smaller ones. \n2. Q-Spots \nQ-Spots (or Quarantine Spots) are those areas in a piece that are either more difficult to play than other areas\, or those in which we experience breakdowns or accidents. We will explore a host of “variable practice” techniques that we can apply to ensure progress. \n3. Interleaved versus Blocked Practice \nScience has shown that we learn best by flitting from one piece to another\, one spot to another\, rather than spending a block of time on one activity. Counterintuitive until we get the hang of it\, interleaving is a much more efficient strategy in the long run\, as it avoids that “illusion of mastery” we sense after we have spent a chunk of time practising a piece\, only to discover we can barely play it the next day. \n4. Managing Repetition \nWe want the playing to proceed automatically in performance\, without the need for conscious thought about which finger goes where. To reach the automatic stage\, we need repetition – but too much\, or the wrong sort of repetition risks ingraining tension\, errors\, and lack of engagement. We will explore a variety of ways to manage repetition creatively and constructively\, avoiding the pitfalls of “habituation”. \n5. Developing Speed \nMany pianists choose slow pieces\, because they are scared they will not be able to play fast ones at speed. While a rock-solid technique is at the basis of fast playing\, how we practise to develop the necessary reflexes is all-important and will make a huge difference in performance. Do we just crank up the metronome with each repetition\, or are there more efficient ways to practise? \nPreparation: Guests should bring pieces they can comfortably play in the performance classes\, together with specific problems from their repertoire or general questions about playing and practising that can be used during the workshops. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGraham Fitch sits at a Steinway piano in a blue shirt and jeans demonstrating a piece to a student. To ensure a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere\, places are open to those who have attended at least one weekend Finchcocks course previously. \n\n\nFrom Score to Sound: A 5-day Advanced Summer School about interpretation and finding our own voice. \n“How do we move from the score to a convincing interpretation? We always start from history\, technique\, style\, listening\, imagination\, and individuality.  Ultimately\, it’s about making artistic decisions. This underpins every piano lesson we’ve ever had\, and every practice session we embark on. This new 5-day Advanced Summer School offers the opportunity to explore the creative process that transforms notes on the page into compelling musical performances. Through a combination of morning workshops\, individual lessons\, masterclasses\, performance classes\, and informal concerts\, we will investigate how pianists make artistic decisions\, balancing historical awareness with imagination and personal expression. Rather than searching for a single ‘correct’ interpretation\, we will explore the many possibilities hidden within a score\, learning how technique\, listening\, analysis and curiosity work together to shape convincing performances. Throughout the week\, participants will be encouraged to question\, experiment and refine their own musical ideas in a supportive environment. Whether working on a familiar masterpiece or discovering new repertoire\, the aim is to leave with greater confidence in their own instrumental technique\, a richer understanding of the music\, and fresh inspiration for future study.“ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLike our weekend courses\, formal tuition takes place in workshops\, performance classes and one-to-one lessons. \nThese particular workshops form part of a continuous sequence: the score – the performer’s imagination – the stages of composition – communicating freshly with an audience – apply all of the above to a new piece of music. \nWorkshop 1: Reading Between the Lines. \nWhat does the score not tell us? Every score is full of information\, yet it can never tell us everything. In this workshop\, we will explore the difference between notation and interpretation\, discovering how composers rely on performers to bring phrasing\, character and imagination to life. Through examples from Mozart\, Beethoven\, Chopin and Debussy\, we will examine what is written\, what is implied\, and what is left for us to decide. Participants will compare different editions\, experiment with alternative musical choices\, and discuss how seemingly small decisions can transform an interpretation. \nWorkshop 2: Borrowing Ears \nWhat could we learn from other performers? Great pianists rarely play the same piece in the same way\, yet every convincing performance reveals something about the music. Rather than imitating recordings\, this workshop explores how listening critically can enrich our own musical thinking. We will compare historic and modern recordings by legendary pianists\, identifying differences in sound\, tempo\, phrasing and character\, before experimenting with these ideas ourselves. Participants will be encouraged to debate\, ‘borrow’ ideas\, and ultimately develop their own artistic responses. \nWorkshop 3: The Composer’s Workshop \nMasterpieces did not emerge perfectly formed. Beethoven filled notebooks with sketches\, Chopin endlessly revised his manuscripts and published 4-5 versions of the same piece\, and Debussy frequently altered details after publication. This workshop explores the creative process behind some of the piano repertoire’s greatest works\, asking what composers changed\, abandoned or reconsidered before reaching the final version. Through manuscripts\, early editions and practical experiments at the keyboard\, participants will gain fresh insight into how understanding a work’s evolution can inform their own interpretations. \nWorkshop 4: One Piece\, Five Interpretations \nCan there ever be a ‘correct’ performance? In this workshop\, we will explore how the same piece can inspire remarkably different but equally convincing interpretations. Together we will compare contrasting recordings\, identify the artistic choices each pianist has made\, and then create our own alternative readings of selected excerpts. Through discussion\, experimentation and performance\, participants will discover that interpretation is not about finding the right answer\, but about making informed\, imaginative and convincing musical decisions. \nWorkshop 5: One Page \nGreat performances begin with great questions. In this workshop\, participants will be asked to propose for studying a single page of music\, something that they have never played before. We will explore how much can be discovered beyond the notes themselves: structure\, harmony\, character\, gesture\, voicing\, historical context\, and the composer’s intentions. Through guided discussion\, demonstrations and group experiments\, we will develop new ways of looking at a score before even playing it\, discovering how deep understanding can inspire imaginative performance choices. Participants will then take it to their practice rooms\, apply these ideas and return to the class to share the discoveries they have made. The aim is to transform the act of practising from simply learning notes into a creative process of exploration and interpretation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs usual\, everyone will have access to their own grand piano for the week including our new Steinway\, and have plenty of time to practise in our vaulted piano cellar. \nWe’ll also have a bit of fun! DESCRIPTION:“David will guide you from where you are – to where you want to be” ~ 2026 Summer School feedback \n\nThis 5-day piano retreat for intermediate players offers pianists grades around grades 4 to 6\, the chance to fully emerse themselves in all that Finchcocks has to offer. \nThe course aims to provide: \n\na luxury break away\nthe chance to practise on our 9 grand pianos without any distraction\nand to challenge guests to understand their repertoire\, by explaining the building blocks of music and how composers imagine and develop their ideas\n\n…all under the inspiring supervision of our Musical Director David Hall (MA\, FRCO\, LRSM) and author of There’s more to playing the piano…! \nOur 5-day summer schools are a well established highlight of the Finchcocks calendar. To ensure a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere\, priority is given to those who have attended at least one weekend Finchcocks course previously. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEach day will begin with a new\, specific warm-up to provide a focus for practice or performance. Like our weekend courses\, formal tuition takes place in workshops\, performance classes and one-to-one lessons. \nThis year’s focuses will be: \nTop Tips for Practice\nPractical strategies for making the most of your time at the piano. We’ll cover how to set goals\, structure practice sessions\, and use focussed techniques that build confidence\, fluency\, and enjoyment in your playing. \nBringing Your Music to Life – Part 1\nIt’s time to play to and learn from each other! This session focuses on phrasing\, dynamics\, and articulation – the essential tools that give your playing shape and character. \nUsing the Cycle of Fifths as a Practice Tool\nThe Cycle of Fifths is more than just a clever theory diagram! Learn how to use this practical framework for understanding keys\, mastering scales\, navigating harmony – and master your repertoire fully. Discover some apps that enable you to practise creatively using the Cycle of Fifths. \nBringing Your Music to Life – Part 2\nExperiencing others’ performances can highlight similar obstacles in your own repertoire. Building on Part 1\, we’ll delve deeper into your repertoire together and polish it up. \n10-Week Plan to Improve Your Reading\nReading fluently unlocks freedom at the piano – and can be great fun in discovering new repertoire! This workshop introduces a step-by-step plan designed to sharpen your reading\, strengthen your pattern recognition\, and make the process more enjoyable and less daunting. (8 weeks for the price of 10!!!!!!!!) \nMaking Melodies\nMelody is at the heart of musical expression. We’ll look at what makes a melody sing\, how to shape lines with elegance\, and how to bring out the expressive voice within any piece of music. And then we’ll make up some of our own on the piano! \nRepertoire Analysis\nPeeling back the layers of a piece reveals its inner workings – from structure and harmony to stylistic detail. In this session\, you’ll learn how analysis can clarify technical challenges\, illuminate interpretation\, and give deeper meaning and confidence to your performance. Using an app specially developed for this course\, you will be able to visualise the harmonic structure of your music. \nPutting It All Together – Style and Texture\nA concluding session that brings the week’s ideas into focus. We’ll explore how style\, voicing\, and texture combine to shape the sound world of a piece\, and how you can integrate these elements into a more confident and expressive performance. \nDavid’s daily Listen and Learn activity is often quoted as the highlight of the week. Aural training not Aural testing! \nPreparation \nDavid would recommend four or more pieces so that there is something new to play in each performance class. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs usual\, everyone will have access to their own grand piano for the week including our new Steinway\, and have plenty of time to practise in our vaulted piano cellar. \nWe’ll also have a bit of fun! In addition to a private recital in the hall of the main house or on our new open-air stage (weather permitting!)\, we’ll explore the private gardens at Finchcocks\, experience a local wine tasting\, be able to go for beautiful Kentish countryside walks to Scotney castle and enjoy a session or two in the family’s new heated swimming pool. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAnd of course\, it goes without saying that you can expect the usual! \nSummer School guests will: \n\nHave the chance to play in and observe multiple performance masterclasses.\nWill receive one-to-one lessons with David.\nEnjoy access to play on our 9 grand pianos anytime between 7am and 8pm.
