DESCRIPTION:Beyond Stage Fright – Tackling performance nerves is designed for upper intermediate to advanced players\, those working towards grade 8 standard or a performance diploma. It is also suitable for piano teachers. \nRunning the weekend is the incredibly knowledgeable\, encouraging and warm Charlotte Tomlinson. A specialist\, international speaker on the topic\, and a pianist herself\, Charlotte will help guests work on an area that affects every performer\, but one that many don’t like to talk about. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nCharlotte’s theme for the weekend course will be “Performance preparation”; covering some of the key topics that relate to the challenges faced by advanced players when playing in front of others. \nCharlotte will tackle three key areas related to performing: \n\nManaging nerves – looking at how performance anxiety can arise and the possible psychological reasons behind it\, along with some simple practical tools to manage the anxiety better. This is followed by the opportunity to put the information into practice\, using a short extract from a piece to try to find freer and more enjoyable ways of managing tricky performance situations.\nOwning the stage – how to communicate well with an audience and feel comfortable on stage\nPractising for performance – how to prepare for a performance\, what to focus on and how to control the inner critic when practising and performing.\n\nEach day starts with a workshop in the Finchcocks cellars. Techniques are discussed\, demonstrated and developed with everyone encouraged to participate. No preparation is required\, and the exercises will be carefully adapted to the particular experience level of each participant. \n \nShortly afterwards\, we convene for a performace masterclass in the recital room\, which provides the chance to play your chosen repertoire in front of the group in a nurturing and relaxed atmosphere. \nIn the afternoons\, there is time for private practice on one of our beautiful grand pianos including our new Steinway and as well as an individual 30 minute private lesson with Charlotte. \n \nAt 7pm on Saturday guests have the treat of listening to a private recital with a glass of wine in Finchcocks main hall – a chance to sit back\, socialise\, relax and be inspired after all your hard work! \nOn a typical weekend course\, Finchcocks guests will: \n\nHave the chance to play in and observe two performance masterclasses and two workshops.\nReceive a one-to-one lesson from tutor Charlotte.\nEnjoy access to play on our 9 grand pianos anytime between 7am and 8pm. DESCRIPTION:The piano music of the French impressionists has a special place in the development of any pianist’s repertoire. The music of Debussy\, Satie and Ravel in particular calls for very special control of tone\, texture\, colour and use of pedal. The amazing scope of musical pictures painted by these composers calls for a course dedicated to their music. From Debussy’s evocative Preludes to the vivid brilliance of Ravel’s virtuosic writing\, this course will explore some of the special challenges and characterstics to be found in this wonderful musical period. \nWe’re incredibly lucky to have secured the services of Warren Mailley-Smith for this course. Warren regularly plays the music of impressionistic composers in concerts across the UK\, and his legendary skills of memorisation mean that he has leagues of wisdom to impart to even the most advanced player. This is him in action when he did a recording session at Finchcocks for Classic FM. \n \nThe course\, for intermediate to advanced players\, is an extended 3-day one so that guests can enjoy the bank holiday weekend at a more leisurely pace! DESCRIPTION:Back by very popular demand\, this will be our fourth Chopin weekend here at Finchcocks with Warren Mailley-Smith. \nChopin’s lyrical and elegant Nocturnes and Preludes are firm favourites with our intermediate and advanced players\, and so we’re very excited to announce the return of our very popular first composer-specific weekend. \nWe’re incredibly lucky to have secured the services of Warren Mailley-Smith for this course. In 2016\, Warren became the first British pianist to perform Chopin’s complete works for solo piano from memory at a series of concerts at St John Smith’s Square in London\, a feat which involved memorising 3.5 million notes! \n \nOver the course of the weekend\, Warren will explore and demonstrate both the technical aspects of playing Chopin’s music\, as well as sessions on how to perform Chopin’s music to the best of our ability. \nHe’ll explain why Chopin sounds like Chopin and show us how Chopin intended us to play his pieces. To ensure a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere\, places are open to those who have attended at least one weekend Finchcocks course previously. \nThis 5-day piano retreat for advanced players offers pianists grade 8\, diploma and beyond\, the chance to fully emerse themselves in all that Finchcocks has to offer. DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to be offering a course with brilliantly talented keyboard player and Early Keyboard Consultant to the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and Royal Welsh Colleges\, Steven Devine. \nDuring this weekend course Keyboard Music from the Baroque\, Steven Devine will explore this incredibly fertile period of keyboard music\, looking at style\, technique\, repertoire and instruments. Although intended for pianists – teaching will be delivered on our Steinway and other beautiful grand pianos – a harpsichord and clavichord will be in residence for the duration of the course so that guests can explore what these instruments can reveal in our interpretation. \nThe course is suitable for pianists playing at an intermediate to advanced level. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs well as a one-to-one lesson with Steven\, weekend tuition will include two workshops and the chance to play in and observe two performance masterclasses also. Please ask for further details. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSteven Devine enjoys a busy career as a music director and keyboard player working with some of the finest musicians. \nHe is the Principal Keyboard Player with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and also the principal keyboard player for The Gonzaga Band\, The Mozartists and performs regularly with many other groups around Europe. He has recorded over thirty discs with other artists and ensembles and made six solo recordings. His recording of Bach’s Goldberg Variations (Chandos Records) has received critical acclaim – including Gramophone magazine describing it as “among the best”. The complete harpsichord works of Rameau (Resonus) has received five-star reviews from BBC Music Magazine. Steven has recently released  Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier (“it’s the one of all I’ve heard in the past ten years that I am happiest to live with.” Early Music Review)  – available on this site. \nHe made his London conducting debut in 2002 at the Royal Albert Hall and is now a regular performer there – including making his Proms directing debut in August 2007 with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. He has conducted the Mozart Festival Orchestra in every major concert hall in the UK and also across Switzerland. Steven is Music Director for New Chamber Opera in Oxford and with them has performed repertoire from Cavalli to Rossini. For the Dartington Festival Opera he has conducted Handel’s Orlando and Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas. DESCRIPTION:In this course\, with Professor of Piano Penelope Roskell\, pianists will have the opportunity to receive expert guidance on their current repertoire\, both from a technical and an artistic point of view. Penelope is the UK’s foremost specialist in healthy piano playing\, and she will share with the group how to put many of the ideas from her award-winning book The Complete PIanist into practice. The weekend promises to be musically intensive as well as friendly and supportive. \nThis course is designed for people who have reached a grade 8+ standard. \n \nEach day typically starts with a workshop in the Finchcocks on our Steinway in the recital room. In the afternoons\, there is time for private practice on one of our beautiful acoustic grand pianos whilst Penelope gives one-to-one tuition to guests. \nThis weekend’s morning workshops will include: \n\nHealthy technique clinic: Problem solving in your repertoire\nNatural artistry workshop: Interpreting your repertoire\n\nBoth provide guests with the perfect opportunity to bring pieces they are working onfor expert guidance. \nWeather permitting\, Penelope will also lead a gentle physical warm up session outside\, showing pianists how to best prepare the mind and body before practice and playing. SUMMARY:Improvisation and harmony weekend with David Hall - mixed ability
DESCRIPTION:This course\, run by Finchcocks Musical Director David Hall\, is ideal for anybody who wants to develop their keyboard skills of harmonisation\, composition and improvisation in a classical style  \nIt is a mixed ability course\, aimed at the intermediate to advanced pianist. Grade 5 theory standard would also be helpful. \n \nRather than the usual performance masterclasses\, guests will take part in four practical and interactive workshops on the following subjects: \n\nIntroduction to harmony\nHow to harmonise a melody\nIntroduction to composition\nImprovisation in a classical style\n\nThere will then be plenty of private practice time in-between to absorb and work on material from each of these sessions\, supported by the wonderfully encouraging\, knowledgeable and insightful David as he circulates giving one-to-one input. \n \nDavid Hall\, author of There’s more to playing the piano… (now stocked by Waterstones) was recently described by the Sunday Times when they joined us on a Finchcocks piano course\, as a “musical powerhouse”. You might have seen some of the videos he created for Finchcocks to help pianists during the UK’s first lockdown. His teaching style is packed full of creative ideas and encouraging – with a gentle with a twist of humour! \nThis is him in action at one of our Saturday evening recitals\, put on for course guests in the main hall of Finchcocks. In 2016\, Warren became the first British pianist to perform Chopin’s complete works for solo piano from memory at a series of concerts at St John Smith’s Square in London\, a feat which involved memorising 3.5 million notes! \n \nOver the course of the weekend\, Warren will explore and demonstrate both the technical aspects of playing Chopin’s music as well as sessions on how to perform Chopin’s music to the best of our ability. \nHe’ll explain why Chopin sounds like Chopin and show us how Chopin intended us to play his pieces. We will be looking attentively at what ‘ingredients’ personalize our sound\, and make us ‘own’ a piece. We shall be discussing the technique of great past masters\, like Gilels\, Richter\, Lipatti\, or Rubinstein\, and what made their playing so unique that you could turn the radio on and immediately recognize their performances.” \nFlorian will instruct the participants on the role of technique\, touch\, and phrasing on sound production\, from both historic and contemporary perspectives\, with the goal of achieving highly personalized performance experience for each individual in the course. \n \n“We shall explore together our understanding of the relationship between the music itself\, the historic context in which it was composed\, and other art forms\, a skill which is an integral part of the actual craft of being a pianist\, and a musician more broadly. DESCRIPTION:Having Graham Fitch on our staff\, it seemed too good an opportunity to miss scheduling a weekend of Baroque and Bach! \nGraham studied harpsichord as a second instrument with Ruth Dyson at the Royal College of Music\, and was runner-up in the intercollegiate harpsichord competition\, The Raymond Russell Prize in 1981. Thereafter he was awarded a Belgian government scholarship to study in Kenneth Gilbert’s classes at the Museum Vleeshuis in Antwerp\, and undertook further postgraduate harpsichord studies with Shirley Mathews at the Peabody Institute. There came a time when Graham had to make the choice between piano and harpsichord\, and the piano won. However\, Graham maintains a lively interest in the harpsichord and in baroque music\, and offers the baroque module for The Piano Teachers’ Course UK. \nThis weekend course at Finchcocks is not designed for specialist harpsichord players\, but for pianists who are keen to discover more about baroque style and to try out their pieces on a harpsichord. The focus for Graham’s course is on aspects of style (Baroque and early Classical styles especially)\, developing performance skills\, including memorisation\, practising towards a performance\, technique and overcoming nerves and anxiety. \nIn advance of the course\, each student is encouraged to practice a few pieces so that\, over the course of the weekend session\, they begin to feel happy performing in front of the group. \nThis course is designed for upper intermediate and advanced pianists. \n \nEach day typically starts with a workshop in the Finchcocks on our Steinway in the recital room. In the afternoons\, there is time for private practice on one of our beautiful acoustic grand pianos and normally there is time for some individual tuition. \n \nLater in the afternoon\, we convene for a masterclass\, which involves a little bit of (very relaxed) performance in front of your classmates. DESCRIPTION:Finchcocks is keen to join in the global celebrations of the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth. In this course dedicated to the music of Beethoven\, Graham Fitch will guide you in exploring the physical\, emotional and intellectual challenges of the music\, paying particular attention to the interpretation of the numerous markings for dynamics and articulation that we find on every page of Beethoven’s music.\n\n\n \nOver the course of the weekend\, Graham will devote a workshop to how Beethoven’s style changed throughout the span of his so-called three periods\, ending with a presentation of a selection of his music.\n\nPlease bring a Beethoven piece (or two) with you to work on in private practice\, performance workshops and masterclasses. You may also like to bring another piece by a different composer of the same era – or otherwise – for variety and comparison!\n\n \nIn the evening on Saturday\, Graham will give a talk and recital on Beethoven\, combining an insight into the composer’s style and rich musical artistry\, that will help us understand the underlying emotions found in his music. \nThere can be few people in the world more qualified to talk to us about practice techniques than Graham. It would also suit piano teachers and anyone studying towards their diploma. \nGraham will also be running a masterclass with the opportunity to explore the full range of repertoire brought by other attendees. Performance skills and interpretation will be the main focus of these sessions. Everyone will be asked in advance to provide a list of their chosen repertoire to encourage collaboration between course participants. \n \nIn addition to masterclasses\, Graham will be offering individual coaching to each attendee. During these sessions\, participants may wish to tackle areas of technical weakness\, explore further repertoire they are working on or focus on material covered in the workshops. \nEach day typically starts with a workshop in the Finchcocks recital room. DESCRIPTION:The piano music of the French impressionists has a special place in the development of any pianist’s repertoire. The music of Debussy\, Satie and Ravel in particular calls for very special control of tone\, texture\, colour and use of pedal. The amazing scope of musical pictures painted by these composers calls for a course dedicated to their music. From Debussy’s evocative Preludes to the vivid brilliance of Ravel’s virtuosic writing\, this course will explore some of the special challenges and characterstics to be found in this wonderful musical period. \nWe’re incredibly lucky to have secured the services of Warren Mailley-Smith for this course. Warren regularly plays the music of impressionistic composers in concerts across the UK\, and his legendary skills of memorisation mean that he has leagues of wisdom to impart to even the most advanced player. This is him in action when he did a recording session at Finchcocks for Classic FM. \n \nOver the course of the weekend\, Warren will explore and demonstrate both the technical aspects of playing music of the Impressionist era as well as sessions on how to perform it to the best of our ability. \nIn the masterclass sessions\, we’ll look at developing phrasing and articulation\, with plenty of tips on performance and how to polish our pieces and make them sound as natural and elegant as possible. \nIn the evening on Saturday\, we are delighted to be welcoming back Erik Satie (played by Alexander Metcalfe) along with Amusia Productions for a magical mystery tour of all things absurd\, in a cinematic and live performance of the biography of Satie’s life and career. DESCRIPTION:This course is designed for anyone who just wants a weekend away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It would suit anyone who wants a bit of time away to practise or wants to fall in love with playing the piano again! \nIt would also be ideal for anyone one who has made a New Year’s resolution to get better at the piano! \nThere are no group sessions\, no performances and no stress! The course is open to pianists of all levels. \n \nThe course is arranged around food – so there’s no strict timetable or deadlines. Guests are free to play anytime they like between 7am and 8pm\, rest when they like or explore the beautiful Kentish countryside. \n \nOn hand throughout will be Warren Mailley-Smith\, one of our most popular tutors at Finchcocks and the first British pianist to perform Chopin’s complete works for solo piano from memory in a series of 11 recitals at St John’s Smith Square. DESCRIPTION:This course is being run by Warren Mailley Smith\, who hit the headlines recently for performing the entire works of Chopin from memory in a series of concerts in London. He appears regularly on Radio 3 and Classic FM\, and is one of our most popular tutors at Finchcocks. \n \nThe formal sessions will include a combination of masterclasses that help develop performance skills\, workshops that help develop technique and individual tuition. \nThe workshop sessions will cover practice techniques\, sight-reading\, memorisation and how to prepare for performances. Everyone will get the chance to accompany a singer or instrumentalist\, and we’ll also run a few duet sessions. \n \nAs usual\, everyone will have access to their own grand piano for the week including our new Steinway\, and have plenty of time to practice in our vaulted recital rooms. \nWe’ll also have a bit of fun. DESCRIPTION:5 DAY SUMMER SCHOOL WITH GRAHAM FITCH AND PENELOPE ROSKELL \nWe’re very excited to have secured the services of Graham Fitch with expert additional tuition from Penelope Roskell for a 5 day summer school for Advanced and Teachers. \nThe course will include workshops\, masterclasses\, an evening recital and provide time to explore the grounds and the idyllic scenery of the Finchcocks estate. \nGraham has constructed a series of technical sessions that will focus on memorisation\, playing with confidence and practice techniques. In addition\, Penelope will be joining the course by Zoom to provide details of recommended warm-up exercises and a discussion on injury prevention and healthy technique. \nIn between the group sessions\, there will plenty of time to play our nine grand pianos\, including our new Steinway in the recital room. \n \nIn between the workshop sessions\, Graham and Penelope will be running masterclasses which will help develop performance skills and confidence. These sessions are run in small groups and provide expert guidance on interpretation\, articulation\, fingering and voicing as well as the opportunity to review the most challenging parts of your chosen repertoire in detail. \nWe’re also particularly excited to be able to confirm that we have arranged a trip to the privately held collection of period keyboard instruments that used to be housed at Finchcocks (whilst it operated as the world famous piano museum). The core collection of 15 keyboard instruments includes spinets\, clavichords\, harpischords\, fortepianos and square pianos dating from 1700 to 1866. DESCRIPTION:We’re very lucky to have Warren Mailley-Smith running our advanced weekend course. \nIn 2016\, Warren became the first British pianist to perform Chopin’s complete works for solo piano from memory at a series of concerts at St John Smith’s Square in London\, a feat which involved memorising 3.5 million notes\, and otherwise can be regularly heard on Classic FM and Radio 3. \n \nThere can be few people in the world more qualified to talk to us about memorisation\, so Warren will also run a session on techniques for memorising pieces and how it can be useful when learning and developing your repertoire. \nHe’ll also run a series of masterclasses designed to help perfect performance. \n \nYou can see Warren in action at Finchcocks when he did a recording session with Classic FM recently. \nIn the evening on Saturday\, Warren will give a talk and recital of his latest concert repertoire. \n \nIn between the workshop and masterclass sessions there will be time for private practise on one of our beautiful grand pianos including our new Steinway. DESCRIPTION:Join pianist Tom Poster and violinist Elena Urioste for a three day weekend of mindful practising\, empowering movement\, breathing\, and exploring the spirit of camaraderie within music-making.  \n \nTom and Elena met in 2013 at a recording session for BBC Radio 3 where they were both members of the New Generation Artist scheme\, and have since day one enjoyed a joyful musical collaboration. Both accomplished soloists in the UK and abroad\, Tom and Elena emphasise a collaborative spirit in their concerto and smaller ensemble performances alike\, and feel passionately about encouraging a spirit of equal partnership amongst their students and colleagues. \nOver the course of the weekend\, Tom will guide intimate\, friendly piano masterclasses; teach individual 30-minute lessons and lead a workshop on performance preparation. \n \nElena will offer gentle yoga classes to start and end each day so that the participants can feel more limber\, mindful\, and perhaps more aware of the space within themselves in which to make music. Elena will also co-lead a chamber music workshop\, where she will rehearse sonatas or shorter works with the participants. \n \nOn Saturday evening\, Elena and Tom will perform a recital of some of their favourite works for violin and piano\, including some of Tom’s own arrangements in the main hall at Finchcocks. \nAs is the case for all Finchcocks piano courses\, each participant will have the use of their own personal grand piano for the weekend\, with boutique hotel style accommodation provided in the adjoining grade 2 listed Finchcocks Coach House and lunches and dinner prepared daily by our very own chef using locally sourced ingredients. \n \nThis course would suit intermediate and advanced players\, with plenty of time for private practice or rest and relaxation. \nTom features regularly on BBC Radio 3 and has made multiple appearances at the BBC Proms – his exceptional versatility has put him in great demand at festivals across the world\, both as a performer and tutor. DESCRIPTION:This course is designed for anyone who just wants a weekend away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It would suit anyone who wants a bit of time away to practise or wants to fall in love with playing the piano again! \nIt would also be ideal for anyone one who has made a New Year’s resolution to get better at the piano! \nThere are no group sessions\, no performances and no stress! The course is open to pianists of all levels. \n \nThe course is arranged around food – so there’s no strict timetable or deadlines. Guests are free to play anytime they like between 7am and 8pm\, rest when they like or explore the beautiful Kentish countryside. \n \nOn hand throughout will be David Hall (FRCO\, MA Cantab)\, who is one of our most popular tutors at Finchcocks\, and was recently described by the Sunday Times when they joined us on a Finchcocks piano course\, as a “musical powerhouse”. Dave will be available to ask questions\, and will have time for two private 1:1 sessions for anyone who would like them. \nOn Saturday night\, he’ll also be playing a recital which is an opportunity to relax and be inspired with a glass of wine in the magical setting of the main Hall of Finchcocks. \n \nWe have one grand piano available for every guest in our vaulted cellars\, including our new Steinway.
