DESCRIPTION:PERFORMANCE WORKSHOP WITH GRAHAM FITCH – JUST RELEASED \nThe focus for Graham’s course is on developing performance skills\, including memorisation\, practising towards a performance\, aspects of style (Baroque and Classical styles especially)\, technique and overcoming nerves and anxiety. In advance of the course\, each student is encouraged to practice a few pieces so that\, over the course of the weekend session\, they begin to feel happy performing in front of the group. \nThis course is designed for people who have reached a good (grade 5 – 8) standard. In many cases\, our students haven’t played for a few years and in some cases may not have access to the piano. If this is the case\, you are welcome to attend the course a little earlier in the day on Friday\, to give yourself time to get back into the swing of it. \nEach day typically starts with a workshop in the Finchcocks cellars. In the afternoons\, there is time for private practice on one of our beautiful acoustic grand pianos and individual tuition from one of our teachers. In the later afternoon\, we convene for a masterclass\, which involves a little bit of (very relaxed) performance in front of your classmates. SUMMARY:Chopin weekend with Warren Mailley-Smith - SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:Chopin’s lyrical and elegant Nocturnes and Preludes are firm favourites with our intermediate and advanced players\, and so we’re very excited to announce our first ever composer-specific weekend. \nWe’re incredibly lucky to have secured the services of Warren Mailley-Smith for this course. In 2016\, Warren became the first British pianist to perform Chopin’s complete works for solo piano from memory at a series of concerts at St John Smith’s Square in London\, a feat which involved memorising 3.5 million notes! \n \nOver the course of the weekend\, Warren will explore and demonstrate both the technical aspects of playing Chopin’s music as well as sessions on how to perform Chopin’s music to the best of our ability. \nHe’ll explain why Chopin sounds like Chopin and show us how Chopin intended us to play his pieces. In the masterclass sessions\, we’ll look at developing phrasing and articulation\, with plenty of tips on performance and how to polish our pieces and make them sound as natural and elegant as possible. \nIn the evening on Saturday\, Warren will give a talk and recital on Chopin\, combining music from various points in his life with a biographical commentary that will help us understand the underlying emotions found in Chopin’s music. \n \nThere can be few people in the world more qualified to talk to us about memorisation\, so Warren (pictured here at a recording session with Classic FM) will also run a session on techniques for memorising pieces and how it can be useful when learning and developing your repertoire. \nIn between the workshop and masterclass sessions there will be time for private practise on one of our beautiful grand pianos. During these sessions\, Warren will drop in to each of the practice rooms to provide individual pointers and tips. \nThe course is intended for intermediate to advanced players who are keen to bring their favourite works by Chopin to life. It might well be that there’s a prelude that you’ve been struggling with for years that you would desperately like to perfect\, or equally there might be a Waltz that you have always wanted to play\, but haven’t yet had the chance to really work on. Budding Chopin devotees\, this is your moment! \nThis course has now sold out\, but Warren’s next weekend course in July has just been released and focuses on the music of Debussy and the Romantics. DESCRIPTION:THREE DAY ADVANCED COURSE \nWe’re very lucky to have secured the services of three of the most talented and engaging piano teachers in the land\, for our first ever three day course for advanced players. \nGraham Fitch\, will be opening the course with his incredibly useful insights into practice strategies. Graham makes the point that the way to progress as quickly as possible is not just to practice more\, but more importantly\, it is to practice more effectively. Graham has a huge social media following\, and will be serving up his hugely popular tips on practising and advanced technique throughout the course. \nWe’ve yet to meet anyone who doesn’t suffer from some nervousness before they play in front of a group\, and for many of us\, the anxiety we feel when we play in front of others can render our pieces unrecognisable! Lucinda Mackworth-Young is an internationally recognised authority on the psychology of performance\, helping both professional and amateur musicians conquer their nerves and play to the best of their abilities. \nWhen we recently surveyed nearly 400 advanced pianists\, more than half of them said one of their key developmental priorities was to improve their skills of improvisation. And it’s amazing how many very good pianists sit in front of the piano and can’t play a single note unless they have music in front of them. Lucinda has designed a session to tackle this head on and get you playing without your books. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDave Hall was recently described by the Sunday Times as a “a musical powerhouse… swing\, jazz\, funk – there’s no style he can’t nail”. He’s also a fellow of the Royal College of Organists\, so his baroque is not too shabby either. Dave will be running a session designed to introduce classical players to jazz\, and another session on methods for improving sight-reading. \nDave and Graham will also be running masterclass sessions on repertoire\, and for anyone interested in taking exams (or indeed teaching students taking exams)\, we’ll be running a session on how examiners mark exams and how to get a distinction. \nThis course is designed for people who have reached an advanced level (grade 7+) standard and are actively playing. Piano teachers and people studying towards diplomas are most welcome\, and will find this course particularly useful.
