SUMMARY:Rachmaninoff course - Warren Mailley Smith - One place left
DESCRIPTION:Rachmaninoff’s fearsome reputation as a composer\, has sometimes put his repertoire out of reach of the amateur pianist\, but his lyrical late romantic style and mastery of counterpoint make him a firm favourite amongst pianists and listeners alike. \nThe challenging nature of his compositions warrant their own course\, so we’ve organised a weekend course dedicated to his music. \nWe’re incredibly lucky to have secured the services of Warren Mailley-Smith for this course. Warren regularly plays Rachmaninoff in concerts in London\, and his legendary skills of memorisation mean that he has leagues of wisdom to impart to even the most advanced player. This is him in action when he did a recording session at Finchcocks for Classic FM. \n \nOver the course of the weekend\, Warren will explore and demonstrate both the technical aspects of playing Rachmaninoff’s music\, dealing in particular with the physical challenges of playing his music. \nIn the masterclass sessions\, we’ll look at developing phrasing and articulation\, with plenty of tips on performance and how to polish our pieces and make them sound as natural and elegant as possible. \n \nIn the evening on Saturday\, Warren will give a talk and recital on Rachmaninoff\, combining music from various points in his life with a biographical commentary that will help us understand the underlying emotions found in his music. \nThere can be few people in the world more qualified to talk to us about memorisation\, so Warren will also run a session on techniques for memorising pieces and how it can be useful when learning and developing your repertoire. \n \nIn between the workshop and masterclass sessions there will be time for private practise on one of our beautiful grand pianos including our new Steinway. It would also suit piano teachers and anyone studying towards their diploma. \nGraham will also be running a masterclass with the opportunity to explore the full range of repertoire brought by other attendees. Performance skills and interpretation will be the main focus of these sessions. Everyone will be asked in advance to provide a list of their chosen repertoire to encourage collaboration between course participants. \nIn addition to masterclasses\, Graham will be offering individual coaching to each attendee. During these sessions\, participants may wish to tackle areas of technical weakness\, explore further repertoire they are working on or focus on material covered in the workshops. \nEach day typically starts with a workshop in the Finchcocks recital room. DESCRIPTION:GORGEOUS PIANO SOUND AND HOW TO GET IT \nIn this course\, Dr. Subotic will teach the pianists to produce their most beautiful sound on the piano by connecting their ear with their technique and imagination. The participants will learn how to listen to the sound they produce\, and how to modulate it to achieve a variety of musical and colourful effects on the piano. \nDr. Subotic will instruct the participants on the role of technique\, touch\, and phrasing on sound production\, from both historic and contemporary perspectives\, with the goal of achieving highly personalized performance experience for each individual in the course. \n \n  \nThe course will include a discussion of legendary pianists whose sound became synonymous with their name (Arthur Rubinstein\, Rudolf Serkin\, Sergei Rachmaninoff\, among others) and how posture\, pedal\, arm weight\, wrist\, and finger technique influence and shape the individual’s sound production. The course will also connect other art forms (visual arts\, dance\, literature) with music making\, and explore the role of imagination and inspiration on sound production. DESCRIPTION:ADVANCED COURSE WITH ANDREW DUNLOP \nOur Advanced course caters for people who are piano teachers or grade 8+ players working towards their diploma. \nOur tutor for the weekend\, Andrew Dunlop\, is an examiner\, adjudicator and the Company pianist for the Northern Ballet\, having received his Doctorate from the Eastman School of Music in New York. \nWorkshop sessions will include: \n\nStrategies for efficient and effective sight-reading\nAdvanced pedalling techniques\nImprovisation for the classically trained pianist\nHow to warm up: best etudes and techniques\nTips on accompanying from a professional accompanist\n\n \nAndrew will also be running a masterclass with the opportunity to explore the full range of repertoire brought by other attendees. Performance skills and interpretation will be the main focus of these sessions. Everyone will be asked in advance to provide a list of their chosen repertoire to encourage collaboration between course participants. \nIn addition to masterclasses\, Andrew will provide 30 minutes of individual coaching to each attendee. If this is the case\, you are welcome to attend the course a little earlier in the day on Friday\, to give yourself time to get back into the swing of it. \nEach day typically starts with a workshop in the Finchcocks cellars. In the afternoons\, there is time for private practice on one of our beautiful acoustic grand pianos and individual tuition from one of our teachers. DESCRIPTION:Chopin’s lyrical and elegant Nocturnes and Preludes are firm favourites with our intermediate and advanced players\, and so we’re very excited to announce our first ever composer-specific weekend. \nWe’re incredibly lucky to have secured the services of Warren Mailley-Smith for this course. In 2016\, Warren became the first British pianist to perform Chopin’s complete works for solo piano from memory at a series of concerts at St John Smith’s Square in London\, a feat which involved memorising 3.5 million notes! \n \nOver the course of the weekend\, Warren will explore and demonstrate both the technical aspects of playing Chopin’s music as well as sessions on how to perform Chopin’s music to the best of our ability. \nHe’ll explain why Chopin sounds like Chopin and show us how Chopin intended us to play his pieces. DESCRIPTION:THREE DAY ADVANCED COURSE \nWe’re very lucky to have secured the services of three of the most talented and engaging piano teachers in the land\, for our first ever three day course for advanced players. \nGraham Fitch\, will be opening the course with his incredibly useful insights into practice strategies. Graham makes the point that the way to progress as quickly as possible is not just to practice more\, but more importantly\, it is to practice more effectively. Graham has a huge social media following\, and will be serving up his hugely popular tips on practising and advanced technique throughout the course. \nWe’ve yet to meet anyone who doesn’t suffer from some nervousness before they play in front of a group\, and for many of us\, the anxiety we feel when we play in front of others can render our pieces unrecognisable! Lucinda Mackworth-Young is an internationally recognised authority on the psychology of performance\, helping both professional and amateur musicians conquer their nerves and play to the best of their abilities. \nWhen we recently surveyed nearly 400 advanced pianists\, more than half of them said one of their key developmental priorities was to improve their skills of improvisation. And it’s amazing how many very good pianists sit in front of the piano and can’t play a single note unless they have music in front of them. Lucinda has designed a session to tackle this head on and get you playing without your books. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDave Hall was recently described by the Sunday Times as a “a musical powerhouse… swing\, jazz\, funk – there’s no style he can’t nail”. He’s also a fellow of the Royal College of Organists\, so his baroque is not too shabby either. Dave will be running a session designed to introduce classical players to jazz\, and another session on methods for improving sight-reading. \nDave and Graham will also be running masterclass sessions on repertoire\, and for anyone interested in taking exams (or indeed teaching students taking exams)\, we’ll be running a session on how examiners mark exams and how to get a distinction. \nThis course is designed for people who have reached an advanced level (grade 7+) standard and are actively playing. Piano teachers and people studying towards diplomas are most welcome\, and will find this course particularly useful.
