SUMMARY:3-day Lower Intermediate course with David Hall - WAITING LIST
DESCRIPTION:Our 3-day course for Intermediate pianists is designed to allow a bit more space to take things at slower pace and in more depth. \nAimed at pianists around grades 2-4 playing level\, the course is led by our Music Director and author of There’s more to playing piano David Hall. Guests can expect his signature inspiration alongside an encouraging and flexible teaching style. \n\nHall certainly knows his stuff\, both academically and as a teacher. ~ Andrew Eales\, Piano Dao \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDuring your stay\, David will cover the following topics in his interactive workshops: \n\nWorkshop 1 – Making the most of your weekend. How to:\n– practice efficiently and effectively\n– structure a practice session\n– ensure practice is creative and enjoyable\n\nWorkshop 2 – There’s More to Playing the Piano Part 1\nExploring intervals\, chords and lead sheets. \n\n\nWorkshop 3 – There’s More to Playing the Piano Part 2\nTips for developing sight-reading and aural skills.\n\n\nThere will also be time for private practice on one of our beautiful grand pianos to consolidate material covered in the workshops. And for those who would like\, David will give one-to-one lessons on our new Steinway to provide individual pointers and tips. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBoth Friday and Saturday include an afternoon performance class\, during which half the group have the chance to play and receive feedback from David. This is a lovely and encouraging setting and will hopefully feel more like an “open lesson” to learn from each other. The closing session on Sunday is left open to delve deeper into topics raised by the group during their stay – a piano clinic of sorts – or a chance to give a particular piece one final airing to celebrate your progress. \nOn the Saturday night\, David will then perform a private salon concert for retreat guests\, which is an opportunity to relax and be inspired with a glass of wine in the magical setting of the main hall of Finchcocks. It really is truly special. \n\n\n\n\nWe have one grand piano available for every guest in our vaulted cellars\, including our new Steinway. Piano conversation will flow freely over coffee and home made biscuits and cakes in between bouts of practice! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDuring the course of their stay guests will: \n\nEnjoy access to play on our 9 grand pianos anytime between 7am and 8pm. (There are enough pianos to go round that everyone can play a piano at any given time.)\nEnjoy a one-to-one lesson with David.\nExperience a private recital for retreat guests in the main hall of the family home\, performed by David.\nJoin and socialise with a group 8 fellow piano enthusiasts during lunch and dinner.\nDine in style with lunches and three course dinners prepared by our fabulous chef.\nExperience the Finchcocks bubble\, hailed as a “paradise for pianists” by BBC Music Magazine and stay in a grade 1 listed country manor.\nBe able to explore the Kentish countryside and local attractions should they wish a trip out.\n\nPlus ones are very welcome on our courses\, with a room surcharge dependant on whether they are a playing or non-playing guest. Please ask for further details. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStarting at 10am on the Friday\, this extended stay gives lower intermediate pianists chance to really absorb and embed new tips and strategies into their playing. If it sounds of interest\, please drop Jenny a line using the form below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Your Name (required)\n \n \n Your Email (required)\n \n \n Which course date(s) are you interested in?\n \n \n Playing level / experience (required)\n \n \n Room price band:\nPlease selectClassic (standard)Considerable (large)Old Dairy (with own piano)\n\n \n Other room preferences: (please select most important one and we'll try to our best to accommodate)\nPlease selectEnsuiteWalk-in showerBath2nd floor3rd floorI'm easy!\n\n \n Please tell us anything else that you think would be helpful:\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	3-day courses\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	from £900 (inclusive of accommodation\, food\, wine and tuition)

SUMMARY:Lower intermediate weekend with David Hall - sold out
DESCRIPTION:Many of us played the piano whilst at school\, but didn’t get quite as far as we’d hoped. Some of us missed out entirely. \nThis course is designed for adult pianists returning to the piano after a gap of a few years (or decades!). It would also suit anyone who has recently taken up the piano and is playing at around grades 2 – 4 level. In fact\, you might have come across this page\, having followed David Hall’s free online beginner and intermediate courses\, launched to help people learn or hone a new skill during coronavirus lockdown! \nThe course will be taught by our wonderful musical director David Hall. The aim of the lower intermediate weekend is for guests to leave Finchcocks with a solid foundation on which to continue their piano journey\, be inspired by some new techniques\, confident and encouraged in the progress they have already made in their piano playing. \n“The course approach is professional but gentle: it’s completely bespoke to your level\, but without the pressure of performance.” ~ James (Google review)\n \nEach day typically starts with a workshop in the Finchcocks recital room. In the afternoons\, there is time for private practice on one of our beautiful acoustic grand pianos including our new Steinway and individual tuition from the tutor. \nWorkshops for this weekend will include: \n\nWorkshop 1: Top tips for practising \nPerformance Class 1: Top tips for performing \nWorkshop 2: Making a melody \nPerformance Class 2: Playing a melody \n\nIn the afternoon we’ll convene for a performance workshop\, which will provide tips on how to make the nicest sounds when playing. There is no pressure to play if you don’t feel ready\, but we aim to make the atmosphere as relaxed and encouraging as possible\, with David being known to ask a nervous player to just “begin with playing the last note”! \nAt 7pm on Saturday\, we have a pre-dinner talk or recital in the main hall of the family home. This is a chance for guests can sit back and relax with a glass of wine: After a full day’s concentration\, nothing beats hearing the course tutor inspiring guests with some current repertoire on the family Bosendorfer! \n \n“As one of the newest beginners\, the group was very supportive – everyone’s there to improve.” ~ Chris (Google review)\n\nOn a typical weekend course\, Finchcocks guests will: \n\nHave the chance to play in and observe two performance masterclasses and two workshops.\nReceive one-to-one input from tutor David during circulation in the free practice sessions.\nEnjoy access to play on our 9 grand pianos anytime between 7am and 8pm. (There are enough pianos to go round that everyone can play a piano at any given time.)\nEnjoy a private recital for course guests on Saturday evening in the main hall of Finchcocks.\nJoin and socialise with a group 8 fellow piano enthusiasts during lunch and dinner.\nDine in style with lunches and three course dinners prepared by our fabulous chef.\nExperience the Finchcocks bubble\, hailed as a “paradise for pianists” by BBC Music Magazine and stay in a grade 1 listed country manor.\n\nPlus ones are very welcome on our courses\, with a room surcharge dependant on whether they are a playing or non-playing guest. SUMMARY:Understanding your playing: Applied theory with David Hall - intermediate - sold out
DESCRIPTION:This course\, run by Finchcocks Musical Director David Hall\, is ideal for anybody who wants to develop their keyboard skills of improvisation\, harmonisation and transposition. It is aimed at all abilities of piano player\, but would best suit the intermediate pianist – from Lower Intermediate to Upper Intermediate. \nWhy study music theory and harmony? \nYou can understand repertoire more fully.  \nIf you can identify chords and cadences – if you can pick out passages of intervallic counterpoint – if you can condense a whole passage of music into one concept – then you can learn repertoire more quickly and you can memorise it more quickly. Instead of saying “this is line 1” and “this is line 2”\, start saying “this is the F major phrase” and “this is the D minor phrase”. You’ll soon find that the notes sink in a little more quickly.   \nYou can interpret music better and more authentically.  \nIf you understand the pushes and pulls of harmony\, you can judge your rubato and your dynamics to convey the harmonic tension to the listener. If you understand which chords are prosaic and which are exciting or particularly calming\, then you can pace your performance accordingly.   \nYou can understand composers’ thought processes.  \nKnowledge of music theory helps you to understand music in the same way that composers understand music.  \n You can learn to improvise and compose your own music.  \nAll the great composers of the Baroque and Classical era were taught harmony\, counterpoint\, style and structure from an early age so that they could perform at the keyboard with or without a printed score.  \nDavid Hall\, author of There’s more to playing the piano… (now stocked by Waterstones) was recently described by the Sunday Times when they joined us on a Finchcocks piano course\, as a “musical powerhouse”. You might have seen some of the videos he created for Finchcocks to help pianists during the UK’s first lockdown. His teaching style is packed full of creative ideas and encouraging – with a gentle with a twist of humour! \n \nThis is him in action at one of our Saturday evening recitals\, put on for course guests in the main hall of Finchcocks. For our Applied Theory course\, David will perform some of his favourite piano pieces and help guests to analyse them using the various frameworks discussed during the day. \n \nAlthough the focus of the weekend will be different to the usual performance-based courses we offer\, David will keep workshops practical\, engaging and interactive\, bringing to life – and making accessible – subjects vital to improving musicality. \nDuring the course\, guests are welcome to try out each of our nine grand pianos in the vaulted cellars – to help put into practice what has been discussed in the group sessions. \n \nGuests will also: \n\nHave the chance to take part in and observe four group harmony sessions.\nReceive one-to-one input from tutor David during circulation in the free practice sessions.\nEnjoy access to play on our 9 grand pianos anytime between 7am and 8pm.
\nThis weekend will include: \n\nWorkshop 1: How to learn a piece of music \nPerformance Class 1: How to play a piece of music \nWorkshop 2: How to understand a piece of music \nPerformance Class 2: How to convey a piece of music \n\nIn the afternoon we’ll convene for a performance workshop\, which will provide tips on how to make the nicest sounds when playing. Please ask for further details. \n\n\nThis course is being run by David Hall (FRCO\, MA Cantab)\, who was described as a “musical powerhouse” when the Sunday Times came to review one of his courses at Finchcocks. Inspiration and encouragement are guaranteed! \nFor booking enquiries\, please contact Jenny on 01580 428080 or fill in the form below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Weekend courses\n\n	from £620 (inclusive of accommodation\, food\, wine and tuition)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Your Name (required)\n \n \n Your Email (required)\n \n \n Please tell us which course are you interested in\, your room preference(s) and a little bit about your playing experience to date:\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n...

SUMMARY:Applied theory weekend with Dave Hall - just released
DESCRIPTION:This course is designed for people who would like to brush up on their music theory. \nIt will aim to cover the major topics found in the ABRSM grade 5 theory syllabus. But unlike ploughing through a book on your own\, our tutor – David Hall (FRCO\, MA Cantab) – will show you how music theory can be applied to your everyday playing\, and how it can help you progress more quickly. \nDave will cover harmony\, key signatures\, intervals transposition and the finer details of notation. And he’ll bring it all to life using the the circle of 5ths\, and show you how improvise harmonies and melodies using these same principles. \n \nDavid Hall was recently described by the Sunday Times when they joined us on a Finchcocks piano course\, as a “musical powerhouse”. This is him in action at one of our Saturday evening recitals in the main Hall of Finchcocks. For our Theory Course\, Dave will perform favourite piano pieces and help you to analyse them using the various frameworks discussed during the day. \n \nDuring the course\, guests are welcome to try out each of our nine grand pianos in the vaulted cellars – to help put into practice what has been discussed in the group sessions. \n \nIf you aren’t sure whether this is the right course for you\, or quite what your level is\, please drop Jenny a line using the form below\, or give here a ring on 01580 428080. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Weekend courses\n\n	from £525 (inc accommodation\, food\, wine and tuition)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Your Name (required)\n \n \n Your Email (required)\n \n \n Please tell us which course are you interested in\, your room preference(s) and a little bit about your playing experience to date:\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n...

SUMMARY:Lower Intermediate with Dave Hall - four places left
DESCRIPTION:This course is designed for people who have made a good start at the piano and got to between grade 2 and grade 4 standard. It’s ideal for players keen to return to the piano after a gap of a few years\, or indeed for anyone practising regularly working up through the grades. \nThis course is being run by David Hall (FRCO\, MA Cantab)\, who is one of our most popular tutors at Finchcocks\, and was recently described by the Sunday Times when they joined us on a Finchcocks piano course\, as a “musical powerhouse”. This allows rapid demonstration and practice of techniques using our nine grand pianos which each have their own glass fronted practice room and surround the main atrium of the cellar. \n \nIn the afternoons\, there is time for private practice on one of our beautiful acoustic grand pianos including our new Steinway. Later in the afternoon\, we convene for a masterclass\, which involves a little bit of (very relaxed) performance in front of your classmates in the recital room. At 7pm we have our pre-dinner talk or recital in the main house\, which is a chance to relax and be inspired with a glass of wine\, before returning to the Coach House for dinner.

SUMMARY:Music and mindfulness: Piano and yoga with Tom Poster and Elena Urioste - long weekend - intermediate to advanced - three places left
DESCRIPTION:Join pianist Tom Poster and violinist Elena Urioste for a three day weekend of mindful practising\, empowering movement\, breathing\, and exploring the spirit of camaraderie within music-making.  \n \nTom and Elena met in 2013 at a recording session for BBC Radio 3 where they were both members of the New Generation Artist scheme\, and have since day one enjoyed a joyful musical collaboration. Both accomplished soloists in the UK and abroad\, Tom and Elena emphasise a collaborative spirit in their concerto and smaller ensemble performances alike\, and feel passionately about encouraging a spirit of equal partnership amongst their students and colleagues. \nOver the course of the weekend\, Tom will guide intimate\, friendly piano masterclasses; teach individual 30-minute lessons and lead a workshop on performance preparation. \n \nElena will offer gentle yoga classes to start and end each day so that the participants can feel more limber\, mindful\, and perhaps more aware of the space within themselves in which to make music. Elena will also co-lead a chamber music workshop\, where she will rehearse sonatas or shorter works with the participants. \n \nOn Saturday evening\, Elena and Tom will perform a recital of some of their favourite works for violin and piano\, including some of Tom’s own arrangements in the main hall at Finchcocks. \nAs is the case for all Finchcocks piano courses\, each participant will have the use of their own personal grand piano for the weekend\, with boutique hotel style accommodation provided in the adjoining grade 2 listed Finchcocks Coach House and lunches and dinner prepared daily by our very own chef using locally sourced ingredients. \n \nThis course would suit intermediate and advanced players\, with plenty of time for private practice or rest and relaxation. \nTom features regularly on BBC Radio 3 and has made multiple appearances at the BBC Proms – his exceptional versatility has put him in great demand at festivals across the world\, both as a performer and tutor. Elena has performed as soloist with major orchestras throughout the United States and the UK\, and is a certified yoga instructor and a co-founder of Intermission\, a program that unites music\, movement\, and mindfulness. \nCourse to include: \n\nintimate\, friendly piano masterclasses\nindividual piano lessons\nmorning and evening yoga sessions with an emphasis on posture\, breathing\, and freedom within music-making\nchamber music class with option to rehearse works for violin and piano\nrecital with Tom Poster and Elena Urioste featuring some of Tom’s own arrangements\ndelicious food\, wonderful wine\, luxurious accommodation and world class tuition!\n\nThe course begins at 10am on Friday and ends at 3.30pm on Sunday. \nFor booking enquiries\, please contact Jenny on 01580 428080 or fill in the form below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Three day course\n\n	from £625 (inc accommodation\, food\, wine and tuition)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Your Name (required)\n \n \n Your Email (required)\n \n \n Please tell us which course are you interested in\, your room preference(s) and a little bit about your playing experience to date:\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n...

SUMMARY:Intermediate course with Melanie Spanswick - Few places remaining
DESCRIPTION:This course is designed for people who are between grade 4 and grade 7 in standard. \nWe’re very lucky to have Melanie Spanswick as our Course Director for this weekend. Melanie is a composer\, performer and writer and has run piano courses throughout Europe\, the USA and the Far East. \n \nMelanie’s sessions will cover some of the key topics that bridge the gap between intermediate and advanced players; exploring physical technique\, developing sight-reading skills and creating a strategy for memorisation. \nPhysical flexibility is an important aspect of piano playing\, and Melanie will be exploring ways of alleviating tension and stiffness whilst developing strong fingers. This will be done via a series of simple but useful exercises\, both at and away from the instrument! \nEach day typically starts with a workshop in the Finchcocks cellars. Techniques are discussed\, demonstrated and developed with everyone encouraged to participate. No preparation is required\, and the exercises will be carefully adapted to the particular experience level of each participant. \n \nShortly afterwards\, we convene for a masterclass in the recital room\, which involves a little bit of (very relaxed) performance in front of your classmates and perhaps a duet or two. \nIn the afternoons\, there is time for private practice on one of our beautiful acoustic grand pianos including our new Steinway and with regular burst of individual supervision from Melanie. \nOn Saturday evening\, we’ll host a recital in main Hall of Finchcocks on the Bosendorfer\, which is a chance to relax and be inspired\, before returning to the Coach House for dinner. \nFor booking enquiries\, please contact Jenny on 01580 428080 or fill in the form below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Weekend courses\n\n	from £525\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Your Name (required)\n \n \n Your Email (required)\n \n \n Please tell us which course are you interested in\, your room preference(s) and a little bit about your playing experience to date:\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n...

SUMMARY:Jazz and Improvisation Weekend with Dr Mark Polishook
DESCRIPTION:The jazz workshop sessions that we run as part of our upper intermediate courses\, got such good reviews that we’re delighted to announce that we’ll be adding two weekend courses that focus exclusively on jazz and improvisation. \nDr Mark Polishook\, who hails from NYC\, is running both of our jazz courses and knows the international jazz scene like no-one else. Growing up in New York in the 1970s\, Mark’s interest in jazz led him to meet many of the jazz legends at a time when Louis Armstrong and Miles Davis were at the height of their fame. His inspiration as a teacher comes from the idea of of passing on the wisdom of the great players of the past to today’s aspiring jazz pianists\, and doing so in a way that is engaging\, accessible and inspiring. \n \nA lot of us grew up with system of ABRSM piano exams with a focus on classical and romantic composers\, and for many the world of jazz and improvisation is as mysterious as it is intriguing. Mark uses a combination of workshops and seminars to help pass on the wisdom of the jazz masters of the past to the jazz enthusiasts of the future. \nAs with all of our weekend courses\, there is plenty of time for private practice on one of our beautiful acoustic grand pianos. At 7pm we have our pre-dinner talk or recital in cellars\, which is a chance to relax and be inspired\, before returning to the Coach House for dinner. \n \nMark’s classes cater for anyone with a keen interest in jazz and improvisation and is suitable for all ability levels. \nFor booking enquiries\, please contact Emma on 01580 428080 or fill in the form below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Weekend courses\n\n	from £475\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n[cmsmasters_contact_form_sc formname="164" email="neil@finchcocks.com" fromname="wordpress"]\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n...
