DESCRIPTION:A course for upper intermediate pianists – or those who teach them! – with Penelope Roskell.\n\nProfessor of Piano and award winning author of the Complete Pianist Penelope Roskell will be leading this weekend course on Essential Piano Technique. It is aimed at not only pianists of an upper intermediate level (including adult returners)\, but teachers of this level too!\nPenelope is the UK’s foremost specialist in healthy piano playing\, and she will share with the group how to put many of the ideas from her comprehensive “piano bible” The Complete Pianist into practice – as well as the thought process and strategy behind her popular piano education series Essential Piano Technique (of which the upper intermediate books in the range are soon to be published!). \nBring along any pieces that you would like help with\, both musically and technically\, as well as any general questions you have about piano playing. There will be some emphasis on ensuring that you feel physically at ease at the piano\, so that you can play without tension or potential injury in the future. \nThe weekend promises to be musically intensive as well as friendly\, supportive and welcoming to everyone. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEach day typically starts with a workshop on the Finchcocks Steinway in the recital room. These are followed by private practice on one of our beautiful acoustic grand pianos whilst Penelope gives one-to-one tuition to guests. The afternoons begin with a performance class (a bit like an open lesson) followed by more chance for priviate consolidation! \nOn this particular course\, Saturday and Sunday also both begin with some gentle warm ups (outside\, weather permitting) to prepare particpants physically and mentally for the workshops ahead*. \nThe two scheduled workshops which follow will give you a chance to ask questions about any tricky spots in your pieces and will cover:\n\nIntermediate technique\nIntermediate musicianship\n\nBoth provide guests with the perfect opportunity to bring pieces they are working on for expert guidance. \n*Comfortable clothing and footwear is recommended for this. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn the Saturday evening\, we have an extra special performance from concert pianist Jong-Gyung Park for you! This is your chance to sit back and be inspired in the main hall of the family home and listen to an astonishing pianist play for you on the Bosendorfer. DESCRIPTION:5 DAY SUMMER SCHOOL WITH GRAHAM FITCH AND PENELOPE ROSKELL \nWe’re very excited to have secured the services of Graham Fitch with expert additional tuition from Penelope Roskell for a 5 day summer school for Advanced and Teachers. \nThe course will include workshops\, masterclasses\, an evening recital and provide time to explore the grounds and the idyllic scenery of the Finchcocks estate. \nGraham has constructed a series of technical sessions that will focus on memorisation\, playing with confidence and practice techniques. In addition\, Penelope will be joining the course by Zoom to provide details of recommended warm-up exercises and a discussion on injury prevention and healthy technique. \nIn between the group sessions\, there will plenty of time to play our nine grand pianos\, including our new Steinway in the recital room. \n \nIn between the workshop sessions\, Graham and Penelope will be running masterclasses which will help develop performance skills and confidence. These sessions are run in small groups and provide expert guidance on interpretation\, articulation\, fingering and voicing as well as the opportunity to review the most challenging parts of your chosen repertoire in detail. \nWe’re also particularly excited to be able to confirm that we have arranged a trip to the privately held collection of period keyboard instruments that used to be housed at Finchcocks (whilst it operated as the world famous piano museum). The core collection of 15 keyboard instruments includes spinets\, clavichords\, harpischords\, fortepianos and square pianos dating from 1700 to 1866. DESCRIPTION:This course is designed for people who are at grade 8 standard or working towards their diploma. It is also suitable for piano teachers. \nWe’re very lucky to have Charlotte Tomlinson as our Course Director for this weekend. \n \nCharlotte’s theme for the weekend course will be “Freedom in piano playing”; covering some of the key topics that relate to the challenges faced by advanced players. \nCharlotte will explore the importance of body awareness and how it can help play with a rich core sound. She’ll explore the mechanics of arms\, wrists and fingers and how good technique can help achieve tension free trills\, even tone and beautiful staccato. \nIn her final group session\, Charlotte will discuss tension\, aches and pains; why pianists should watch out for them\, and what they can do to make sure they remain free of injuries. \nEach day starts with a workshop in the Finchcocks cellars. Techniques are discussed\, demonstrated and developed with everyone encouraged to participate. DESCRIPTION:GORGEOUS PIANO SOUND AND HOW TO GET IT \nIn this course\, Dr. Subotic will teach the pianists to produce their most beautiful sound on the piano by connecting their ear with their technique and imagination. The participants will learn how to listen to the sound they produce\, and how to modulate it to achieve a variety of musical and colourful effects on the piano. \nDr. Subotic will instruct the participants on the role of technique\, touch\, and phrasing on sound production\, from both historic and contemporary perspectives\, with the goal of achieving highly personalized performance experience for each individual in the course. \n \n  \nThe course will include a discussion of legendary pianists whose sound became synonymous with their name (Arthur Rubinstein\, Rudolf Serkin\, Sergei Rachmaninoff\, among others) and how posture\, pedal\, arm weight\, wrist\, and finger technique influence and shape the individual’s sound production. The course will also connect other art forms (visual arts\, dance\, literature) with music making\, and explore the role of imagination and inspiration on sound production. DESCRIPTION:THREE DAY ADVANCED COURSE \nWe’re very lucky to have secured the services of three of the most talented and engaging piano teachers in the land\, for our first ever three day course for advanced players. \nGraham Fitch\, will be opening the course with his incredibly useful insights into practice strategies. Graham makes the point that the way to progress as quickly as possible is not just to practice more\, but more importantly\, it is to practice more effectively. Graham has a huge social media following\, and will be serving up his hugely popular tips on practising and advanced technique throughout the course. \nWe’ve yet to meet anyone who doesn’t suffer from some nervousness before they play in front of a group\, and for many of us\, the anxiety we feel when we play in front of others can render our pieces unrecognisable! Lucinda Mackworth-Young is an internationally recognised authority on the psychology of performance\, helping both professional and amateur musicians conquer their nerves and play to the best of their abilities. \nWhen we recently surveyed nearly 400 advanced pianists\, more than half of them said one of their key developmental priorities was to improve their skills of improvisation. And it’s amazing how many very good pianists sit in front of the piano and can’t play a single note unless they have music in front of them. Lucinda has designed a session to tackle this head on and get you playing without your books. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDave Hall was recently described by the Sunday Times as a “a musical powerhouse… swing\, jazz\, funk – there’s no style he can’t nail”. He’s also a fellow of the Royal College of Organists\, so his baroque is not too shabby either. Dave will be running a session designed to introduce classical players to jazz\, and another session on methods for improving sight-reading. \nDave and Graham will also be running masterclass sessions on repertoire\, and for anyone interested in taking exams (or indeed teaching students taking exams)\, we’ll be running a session on how examiners mark exams and how to get a distinction. \nThis course is designed for people who have reached an advanced level (grade 7+) standard and are actively playing. Piano teachers and people studying towards diplomas are most welcome\, and will find this course particularly useful. He’ll also pick out a couple of his recommendations from the alternative lists that aren’t provided in the standard repertoire books. \nWorkshop: How to teach sight-reading and aural skills\nOften a source of anxiety amongst students\, aural skills and sight-reading skills are a key component of ABRSM exams and can make the difference between a pass and fail\, or a merit and a distinction. Drawing on more than 2 decades of choral experience\, David will run through teaching techniques that help build confidence in these areas\, and integrate naturally into the weekly routine. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSeminar: How examiners mark exams and Mock exam\nNigel Scaife\, a former ABRSM examiner\, will outline the framework used by examiners and discuss the key considerations when assessing pieces and scales.
