SUMMARY:Baroque and Bach with Graham Fitch - sold out
DESCRIPTION:Having Graham Fitch on our staff\, it seemed too good an opportunity to miss scheduling a weekend of Baroque and Bach! \nGraham studied harpsichord as a second instrument with Ruth Dyson at the Royal College of Music\, and was runner-up in the intercollegiate harpsichord competition\, The Raymond Russell Prize in 1981. Thereafter he was awarded a Belgian government scholarship to study in Kenneth Gilbert’s classes at the Museum Vleeshuis in Antwerp\, and undertook further postgraduate harpsichord studies with Shirley Mathews at the Peabody Institute. There came a time when Graham had to make the choice between piano and harpsichord\, and the piano won. However\, Graham maintains a lively interest in the harpsichord and in baroque music\, and offers the baroque module for The Piano Teachers’ Course UK. \nThis weekend course at Finchcocks is not designed for specialist harpsichord players\, but for pianists who are keen to discover more about baroque style and to try out their pieces on a harpsichord. The focus for Graham’s course is on aspects of style (Baroque and early Classical styles especially)\, developing performance skills\, including memorisation\, practising towards a performance\, technique and overcoming nerves and anxiety. \nIn advance of the course\, each student is encouraged to practice a few pieces so that\, over the course of the weekend session\, they begin to feel happy performing in front of the group. \nThis course is designed for upper intermediate and advanced pianists. \n \nEach day typically starts with a workshop in the Finchcocks on our Steinway in the recital room. In the afternoons\, there is time for private practice on one of our beautiful acoustic grand pianos and normally there is time for some individual tuition. \n \nLater in the afternoon\, we convene for a masterclass\, which involves a little bit of (very relaxed) performance in front of your classmates. Graham will also provide his top tips on conquering performance nerves and how to prepare your repertoire for a performance. Graham is an authority on efficient and effective practice\, and his three “S”s of practice: slowly\, separately and sections will be explained and demonstrated. \n \nAt 7pm on Saturday we have our pre-dinner talk or recital in the main house\, which is a chance to relax with a glass of wine and be inspired\, before a delicious dinner cooked up by our chef. \nFor booking enquiries\, please contact Jenny on 01580 428080 or fill in the form below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Weekend courses\n\n	from £600 (inclusive of accommodation\, tuition and all food and wine)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Your Name (required)\n \n \n Your Email (required)\n \n \n Please tell us which course are you interested in\, your room preference(s) and a little bit about your playing experience to date:\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n...

DESCRIPTION:Finchcocks is keen to join in the global celebrations of the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth. In this course dedicated to the music of Beethoven\, Graham Fitch will guide you in exploring the physical\, emotional and intellectual challenges of the music\, paying particular attention to the interpretation of the numerous markings for dynamics and articulation that we find on every page of Beethoven’s music.\n\n\n \nOver the course of the weekend\, Graham will devote a workshop to how Beethoven’s style changed throughout the span of his so-called three periods\, ending with a presentation of a selection of his music.\n\nPlease bring a Beethoven piece (or two) with you to work on in private practice\, performance workshops and masterclasses. You may also like to bring another piece by a different composer of the same era – or otherwise – for variety and comparison!\n\n \nIn the evening on Saturday\, Graham will give a talk and recital on Beethoven\, combining an insight into the composer’s style and rich musical artistry\, that will help us understand the underlying emotions found in his music. \nThere can be few people in the world more qualified to talk to us about practice techniques than Graham. Author of his blog www.practisingthepiano.com and his own online piano academy\, Graham’s ideas for healthy piano technique and practice tips attract followers from across the world. He will also offer a broader workshops on healthy piano and practice technique to compliment the programme. \n \nIn between the workshop and masterclass sessions there will be time for private practice on one of our beautiful grand pianos including our new Steinway. During these sessions\, Graham will drop in to each of the practice rooms to provide individual pointers and tips. \nThe course is intended for intermediate to advanced players who are keen to bring their favourite works by Beethoven to life. It might well be that there’s a piece that you’ve been struggling with for years that you would desperately like to perfect\, or equally there might be something you’ve always wanted to play\, but haven’t yet had the chance to really work on. \nFor booking enquiries\, please contact us on 01580 428080 or fill in the form below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Weekend courses\n\n	from £600 (inclusive of accommodation\, tuition and all food and wine)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Your Name (required)\n \n \n Your Email (required)\n \n \n Subject\n \n \n Your Message\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n...

SUMMARY:Exploring the Impressionists with Warren Mailley-Smith - sold out
DESCRIPTION:The piano music of the French impressionists has a special place in the development of any pianist’s repertoire. The music of Debussy\, Satie and Ravel in particular calls for very special control of tone\, texture\, colour and use of pedal. The amazing scope of musical pictures painted by these composers calls for a course dedicated to their music. From Debussy’s evocative Preludes to the vivid brilliance of Ravel’s virtuosic writing\, this course will explore some of the special challenges and characterstics to be found in this wonderful musical period. \nWe’re incredibly lucky to have secured the services of Warren Mailley-Smith for this course. Warren regularly plays the music of impressionistic composers in concerts across the UK\, and his legendary skills of memorisation mean that he has leagues of wisdom to impart to even the most advanced player. This is him in action when he did a recording session at Finchcocks for Classic FM. \n \nOver the course of the weekend\, Warren will explore and demonstrate both the technical aspects of playing music of the Impressionist era as well as sessions on how to perform it to the best of our ability. \nIn the masterclass sessions\, we’ll look at developing phrasing and articulation\, with plenty of tips on performance and how to polish our pieces and make them sound as natural and elegant as possible. \nIn the evening on Saturday\, we are delighted to be welcoming back Erik Satie (played by Alexander Metcalfe) along with Amusia Productions for a magical mystery tour of all things absurd\, in a cinematic and live performance of the biography of Satie’s life and career. Read about its Finchcocks debut here. \n \nThere can be few people in the world more qualified to talk to us about memorisation\, so Warren will also run a session on techniques for memorising pieces and how it can be useful when learning and developing your repertoire. \n \nIn between the workshop and masterclass sessions there will be time for private practise on one of our beautiful grand pianos. During these sessions\, Warren will drop in to each of the practice rooms to provide individual pointers and tips. \nFor booking enquiries\, please contact us on 01580 428080 or fill in the form below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Weekend courses\n\n	from £600 (inclusive of accommodation\, tuition and all food and wine)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Your Name (required)\n \n \n Your Email (required)\n \n \n Subject\n \n \n Your Message\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n...

SUMMARY:Rachmaninoff weekend with Warren Mailley Smith - two places left
DESCRIPTION:Rachmaninoff’s fearsome reputation as a composer\, has sometimes put his repertoire out of reach of the amateur pianist\, but his lyrical late romantic style and mastery of counterpoint make him a firm favourite amongst pianists and listeners alike. \nThe challenging nature of his compositions warrant their own course\, so we’ve organised a weekend course dedicated to his music. \nWe’re incredibly lucky to have secured the services of Warren Mailley-Smith for this course. SUMMARY:Applied theory weekend with Dave Hall - just released
DESCRIPTION:This course is designed for people who would like to brush up on their music theory. \nIt will aim to cover the major topics found in the ABRSM grade 5 theory syllabus. But unlike ploughing through a book on your own\, our tutor – David Hall (FRCO\, MA Cantab) – will show you how music theory can be applied to your everyday playing\, and how it can help you progress more quickly. \nDave will cover harmony\, key signatures\, intervals transposition and the finer details of notation. And he’ll bring it all to life using the the circle of 5ths\, and show you how improvise harmonies and melodies using these same principles. \n \nDavid Hall was recently described by the Sunday Times when they joined us on a Finchcocks piano course\, as a “musical powerhouse”. SUMMARY:Chopin weekend with Warren Mailley Smith - one place left
DESCRIPTION:Chopin’s lyrical and elegant Nocturnes and Preludes are firm favourites with our intermediate and advanced players\, and so we’re very excited to announce the return of our very popular first composer-specific weekend. \nWe’re incredibly lucky to have secured the services of Warren Mailley-Smith for this course. In 2016\, Warren became the first British pianist to perform Chopin’s complete works for solo piano from memory at a series of concerts at St John Smith’s Square in London\, a feat which involved memorising 3.5 million notes! \n \nOver the course of the weekend\, Warren will explore and demonstrate both the technical aspects of playing Chopin’s music as well as sessions on how to perform Chopin’s music to the best of our ability. \nHe’ll explain why Chopin sounds like Chopin and show us how Chopin intended us to play his pieces. In the masterclass sessions\, we’ll look at developing phrasing and articulation\, with plenty of tips on performance and how to polish our pieces and make them sound as natural and elegant as possible. \n \nYou can see Warren in action at Finchcocks when he did a recording session with Classic FM recently. \nIn the evening on Saturday\, Warren will give a talk and recital on Chopin\, combining music from various points in his life with a biographical commentary that will help us understand the underlying emotions found in Chopin’s music. \nThere can be few people in the world more qualified to talk to us about memorisation\, so Warren will also run a session on techniques for memorising pieces and how it can be useful when learning and developing your repertoire. \nIn between the workshop and masterclass sessions there will be time for private practise on one of our beautiful grand pianos including our new Steinway. During these sessions\, Warren will drop in to each of the practice rooms to provide individual pointers and tips. \n \nThe course is intended for intermediate to advanced players who are keen to bring their favourite works by Chopin to life. It might well be that there’s a prelude that you’ve been struggling with for years that you would desperately like to perfect\, or equally there might be a Waltz that you have always wanted to play\, but haven’t yet had the chance to really work on. Budding Chopin devotees\, this is your moment! \nFor booking enquiries\, please contact us on 01580 428080 or fill in the form below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Weekend courses\n\n	from £525 (inc accommodation\, food\, wine and tuition)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Your Name (required)\n \n \n Your Email (required)\n \n \n Subject\n \n \n Your Message\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n...

SUMMARY:Intermediate course with Melanie Spanswick - Few places remaining
DESCRIPTION:This course is designed for people who are between grade 4 and grade 7 in standard. \nWe’re very lucky to have Melanie Spanswick as our Course Director for this weekend. Melanie is a composer\, performer and writer and has run piano courses throughout Europe\, the USA and the Far East. \n \nMelanie’s sessions will cover some of the key topics that bridge the gap between intermediate and advanced players; exploring physical technique\, developing sight-reading skills and creating a strategy for memorisation. \nPhysical flexibility is an important aspect of piano playing\, and Melanie will be exploring ways of alleviating tension and stiffness whilst developing strong fingers. This will be done via a series of simple but useful exercises\, both at and away from the instrument! \nEach day typically starts with a workshop in the Finchcocks cellars. Techniques are discussed\, demonstrated and developed with everyone encouraged to participate. No preparation is required\, and the exercises will be carefully adapted to the particular experience level of each participant. \n \nShortly afterwards\, we convene for a masterclass in the recital room\, which involves a little bit of (very relaxed) performance in front of your classmates and perhaps a duet or two. \nIn the afternoons\, there is time for private practice on one of our beautiful acoustic grand pianos including our new Steinway and with regular burst of individual supervision from Melanie. \nOn Saturday evening\, we’ll host a recital in main Hall of Finchcocks on the Bosendorfer\, which is a chance to relax and be inspired\, before returning to the Coach House for dinner. \nFor booking enquiries\, please contact Jenny on 01580 428080 or fill in the form below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Weekend courses\n\n	from £525\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Your Name (required)\n \n \n Your Email (required)\n \n \n Please tell us which course are you interested in\, your room preference(s) and a little bit about your playing experience to date:\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n...

SUMMARY:Warren Mailley-Smith - Exploring the Romantic composers - Intermediates - Long weekend - SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:The Romantic composers always feature prominently at our piano courses at Finchcocks. So we’ve designed a course that helps intermediate players access a wealth of beautiful piano repertoire from some of world’s most inspiring composers over a three day long weekend course on Friday 5 July to Sunday 7 July. \nWe’re incredibly lucky to have secured the services of Warren Mailley-Smith for this course. In 2016\, Warren became the first British pianist to perform Chopin’s complete works for solo piano from memory at a series of concerts at St John Smith’s Square in London. Warren also features regularly on Classic FM\, and has played in Wigmore Hall\, Carnegie Hall as well as having performed for the British Royal Family on numerous occasions. \nThis course will explore the work and styles of five major romantic composers: Chopin\, Liszt\, Brahms\, Schumann and Schubert; with Warren doing a talk and analysis on each of these composers over a three-day course. \n \nIn each session\, Warren will discuss the styles and characteristics of the each of the composers\, help discover new repertoire and furnish participants with techniques to tackle the music of each composer. \nThere will also be an opportunity for each participant to play one or two pieces (ideally composed by one of our five romantic composers) that they have been working on in advance of the course. These pieces don’t have to concert ready – it’s perfectly acceptable to bring pieces that are partially prepared\, where guidance is need on particularly tricky parts. During these sessions\, Warren will look at developing phrasing and articulation\, with plenty of tips on performance and how to polish our pieces and make them sound as natural and elegant as possible. \nIn the evening on Saturday\, Warren will give a talk and recital on our five romantic composers\, providing a biographical and historical commentary of the romantic movement through to Debussy and the beginnings of the impressionist movement. \n \nIn between the seminars and masterclass sessions there will be time for private practise on one of our beautiful grand pianos including our new Steinway. During these sessions\, Warren will drop in to each of the practice rooms to provide individual pointers and tips. \nThe course is intended for intermediate players who are keen to bring their favourite repertoire to life. It might well be that there’s a Chopin prelude that you’ve been struggling with for years that you would desperately like to perfect\, or equally there might be Schubert Impromtu that you have always wanted to play\, but haven’t yet had the chance to really work on. Or you might just be looking for inspiration – recommendations of pieces that are suitable to your ability level – or from composers that you particularly love. \nEither way\, the chance to spend a long weekend immersed in the music of the world’s most inspiring composers is not to be missed. \nFor booking enquiries\, please contact us on 01580 428080 or fill in the form below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Weekend courses\n\n	from £575\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Your Name (required)\n \n \n Your Email (required)\n \n \n Subject\n \n \n Your Message\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n...

In the masterclass sessions\, we’ll look at developing phrasing and articulation\, with plenty of tips on performance and how to polish our pieces and make them sound as natural and elegant as possible. \nIn the evening on Saturday\, Warren will give a talk and recital on Chopin\, combining music from various points in his life with a biographical commentary that will help us understand the underlying emotions found in Chopin’s music. \n \nThere can be few people in the world more qualified to talk to us about memorisation\, so Warren (pictured here at a recording session with Classic FM) will also run a session on techniques for memorising pieces and how it can be useful when learning and developing your repertoire. \nIn between the workshop and masterclass sessions there will be time for private practise on one of our beautiful grand pianos. During these sessions\, Warren will drop in to each of the practice rooms to provide individual pointers and tips. \nThe course is intended for intermediate to advanced players who are keen to bring their favourite works by Chopin to life. It might well be that there’s a prelude that you’ve been struggling with for years that you would desperately like to perfect\, or equally there might be a Waltz that you have always wanted to play\, but haven’t yet had the chance to really work on. Budding Chopin devotees\, this is your moment! \nThis course has now sold out\, but Warren’s next weekend course in July has just been released and focuses on the music of Debussy and the Romantics. This course is expected to sell out\, so please book early to avoid disappointment. \nFor booking enquiries\, please contact us on 01580 428080 or fill in the form below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Weekend courses\n\n	from £475\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Your Name (required)\n \n \n Your Email (required)\n \n \n Subject\n \n \n Your Message\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n...

SUMMARY:Intermediate Weekend with Melanie Spanswick - ONLY ONE PLACE LEFT
\nShortly afterwards\, we convene for a masterclass\, which involves a little bit of (very relaxed) performance in front of your classmates and perhaps a duet or two. \nIn the afternoons\, there is time for private practice on one of our beautiful acoustic grand pianos and with regular burst of individual supervision from Melanie. \nAt 7pm we have our pre-dinner talk or recital\, which is a chance to relax and be inspired\, before returning to the Coach House for dinner. \nFor booking enquiries\, please contact Emma on 01580 428080 or fill in the form below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Weekend courses\n\n	from £475\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Your Name (required)\n \n \n Your Email (required)\n \n \n Please tell us which course are you interested in\, your room preference(s) and a little bit about your playing experience to date:\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n...

SUMMARY:Jazz and Improvisation Weekend with Dr Mark Polishook
DESCRIPTION:The jazz workshop sessions that we run as part of our upper intermediate courses\, got such good reviews that we’re delighted to announce that we’ll be adding two weekend courses that focus exclusively on jazz and improvisation. \nDr Mark Polishook\, who hails from NYC\, is running both of our jazz courses and knows the international jazz scene like no-one else. Growing up in New York in the 1970s\, Mark’s interest in jazz led him to meet many of the jazz legends at a time when Louis Armstrong and Miles Davis were at the height of their fame. His inspiration as a teacher comes from the idea of of passing on the wisdom of the great players of the past to today’s aspiring jazz pianists\, and doing so in a way that is engaging\, accessible and inspiring. \n \nA lot of us grew up with system of ABRSM piano exams with a focus on classical and romantic composers\, and for many the world of jazz and improvisation is as mysterious as it is intriguing. Mark uses a combination of workshops and seminars to help pass on the wisdom of the jazz masters of the past to the jazz enthusiasts of the future. \nAs with all of our weekend courses\, there is plenty of time for private practice on one of our beautiful acoustic grand pianos. At 7pm we have our pre-dinner talk or recital in cellars\, which is a chance to relax and be inspired\, before returning to the Coach House for dinner. \n \nMark’s classes cater for anyone with a keen interest in jazz and improvisation and is suitable for all ability levels. \nFor booking enquiries\, please contact Emma on 01580 428080 or fill in the form below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Weekend courses\n\n	from £475\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n[cmsmasters_contact_form_sc formname="164" email="neil@finchcocks.com" fromname="wordpress"]\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n...

SUMMARY:Jazz\, pop and busking with David Hall - SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:For musicians who didn’t necessarily grow up with staves and clefs\, or indeed anyone who is sick of them\, Dave Hall’s course on “Jazz\, pop and busking” is a life-saver. \nFor pianists who grew up with traditional notation\, the world of chords and base lines is as beguiling as it is intriguing. For jazz and pop pianists\, traditional notation might well feel cumbersome and inaccessible. But there’s merit in both approaches\, and Dave Hall attempts to level the playing field by introducing classical pianists to chord notation and improvisation\, and helping pop and jazz pianists decode the mysteries of ledger lines and accidentals. \nDave’s sessions will include: “Reading chords quickly – lead sheets and notation”\, “Texture – constructing bass lines and finding the best voicings”\, “Melody – improvisation and composition” and “Rhythm and groove – making your performance convincing”. \n \nIn between David’s sessions\, there is time for private practice on one of our beautiful acoustic grand pianos and Dave will drop in regularly to see how you are getting on. We have a large range of music available to borrow during the courses\, and its a lot of fun to rummage through and test out your sight reading. \nThis course is designed for anyone who can play proficiently by ear\, or is an upper intermediate if they’ve had classical piano lessons (so roughly grade 4 – 8 standard). For anyone who doesn’t have access to a piano\, you’re welcome to come a bit earlier on Friday and dust off the cobwebs before everyone else arrives. \nThis course is being run by David Hall (FRCO\, MA Cantab). \nFor booking enquiries\, please contact Emma on 01580 428080 or fill in the form below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Weekend courses\n\n	from £475\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n[cmsmasters_contact_form_sc formname="164" email="neil@finchcocks.com" fromname="wordpress"]\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n...
