SUMMARY:5-day Autumn School for advanced pianists with Dr. Vedrana Subotic
DESCRIPTION:Explore the music of four piano greats with a 5-day course dedicated to Beethoven\, Chopin\, Liszt and Debussy. \nDo you love playing Chopin\, but lack confidence to play Beethoven? Would you love the challenge of learning a Liszt piece when you usually stick to “impressionist” repertoire? Spanning almost a 100 years from the birth of Beethoven through to Debussy\, there is a wealth of musical history and influence to experience! \nThis 5-day course for advanced players aims to expand pianists’ repertoire\, technique and confidence under the expert guidance of award-winning Steinway artist\, Professor-Lecturer of Music at the University of Utah\, visiting Professor of Piano at the University of Chile and President of the World Piano Teachers Association USA Dr. Vedrana Subotic. \nOur 5-day courses are a well established highlight of the Finchcocks calendar. To ensure a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere\, places are open to those who have attended at least one weekend Finchcocks course previously. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLike our weekend courses\, formal tuition takes place in workshops\, performance classes and one-to-one lessons. \nWe recommend that guests prepare TWO pieces\, one for two of the four performance masterclasses. We realise this is quite a big ask for advanced players\, given the hours of dedication needed to prepare for a performance ready piece. Performance in every masterclass is not mandatory. Even preparing a piece in private will help contextualise the workshop and open-lessons better! \nWorkshops will include: \n\nBeethoven Piano Sonatas: Understanding the difference between classical and romantic elements of Beethoven’s style.\nChopin Nocturnes: bel canto and the singing piano. How do we make it sound like a voice?\nUnlocking the virtuoso technique in Liszt’s music: What’s in the fingers and what is in the arm?\nDiscovering the hidden meanings symbolism in Debussy’s piano music.\n\n\n\nOver the course of her vibrant and multi-faceted musical career\, pianist Vedrana Subotic has distinguished herself as an internationally acclaimed concert artist\, pedagogue\, and chamber musician. Subotic’s performances have been lauded by critics and audiences for both “fierce playing and impressive chops” (Salt Lake Tribune)\, and “nuanced and expressive playing\, beautifully phrased lines\, and a wonderfully light touch.” (Deseret News). Artists of Utah described her recent performance of Schubert PianoTrio No.2 as “one of the most intuitively verdant and emotionally draining performance of any of Franz Schubert’s compositions that I have ever heard\, live or on a recording…truly astonishing.” \nSubotic\, a Steinway Artist\, maintains a busy concert and masterclass schedule with over 60 engagements in North and South America\, Europe\, and Asia every year. She has performed more than 500 works in the solo\, chamber\, and concerto genres\, including the 32 piano sonatas\, and complete chamber works with piano by Beethoven. Her most recent live-streamed concert performance of works by Brahms\, Schubert\, and Piazzolla received over 160K views. \nSubotic is an award-winning Professor-Lecturer of Music at the University of Utah\, and a Visiting Professor of Piano at the University of Chile. She serves as the newly appointed President of the World Piano Teachers Association USA\, Executive Director of the USA Chapter Conference\, and as the Music Director (2002-present) of INTERMEZZO Concert Series based in Salt Lake City\, Utah. Subotic is the founding member of the Intermezzo Piano Trio\, and the state president for the Utah chapter of ALS (American Liszt Society). \nThis will be Vedrana’s fourth course at Finchcocks and we can’t wait to welcome her back! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs usual\, everyone will have access to their own grand piano for the week including our new Steinway\, and have plenty of time to practise in our vaulted piano cellar. \nWe’ll also have a bit of fun! We’ll explore the private gardens at Finchcocks\, visit an historic piano collection and be able to go for beautiful Kentish countryside walks to Scotney castle. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAnd of course\, it goes without saying that you can expect the usual! \nGuests will: \n\nHave the chance to play in and observe multiple performance masterclasses.\nWill receive one-to-one lessons with Vedrana.\nEnjoy access to play on our 9 grand pianos anytime between 7am and 8pm. (There are enough pianos to go round that everyone can play a piano at any given time.)\nHave the chance to take part in a recital on the Bosendorfer in the main hall of the family home.\nJoin and socialise with a group 8 fellow piano enthusiasts during lunch and dinner.\nDine in style with lunches and three course dinners prepared by our fabulous chef.\nExperience the Finchcocks bubble\, hailed as a “paradise for pianists” by BBC Music Magazine and stay in a grade 1 listed country manor.\n\nPlus ones are very welcome on our courses\, with a room surcharge dependant on whether they are a playing or non-playing guest. Please ask for further details. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is a unique\, luxury UK-based piano gem and an experience that you won’t forget anytime soon. Many guests continue friendships made on these courses\, encouraging each other on in the piano playing on Whatsapp\, organising private piano meet ups further down the line… and bumping into each other again on future courses! \nFor booking enquiries\, please contact Jenny on 01580 428080 or fill in the form below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	5 day courses\n\n	from £1450 (inclusive of accommodation\, tuition and all food and wine)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Your Name (required)\n \n \n Your Email (required)\n \n \n Please tell us which course are you interested in\, your room preference(s) and a little bit about your playing experience to date:

SUMMARY:Keyboard music from the Bach Family
DESCRIPTION:One of the great musical dynasties\, the Bach family arguably produced some of the finest musicians ever.  Although the name Bach for most people refers to Johann Sebastian\, there were many others in the family line\, including three of his sons who developed and changed musical style. \nWe are delighted to be offering a second course this year with brilliantly talented keyboard player and Early Keyboard Consultant to the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and Royal Welsh Colleges\, Steven Devine. \nTeaching will be delivered on our Steinway and other beautiful grand pianos but supplemented with the addition of  a harpsichord and clavichord\, both in residence for the duration of the course so that guests can explore what these instruments can reveal in our interpretation. \nThe course is suitable for pianists playing at an intermediate to advanced level. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs well as a one-to-one lesson with Steven\, weekend tuition will include two workshops and the chance to play in and observe two performance masterclasses also. Themes to be explored are: \n\n\n“Can I leave the ornaments out?” [spoiler alert – no] \n\n\n“How fast should it go?” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“He’s building a reputation as an outstanding recitalist; this completion of his ‘48’ is a highly satisfying account.” BBC Music Magzine November 2020 \n\nOn Saturday evening\, guests can sit back and relax in the main hall of the family home and enjoy a performance by Steven himself. This is an opportunity to hear an artist regularly featured on BBC Radio 3 perform an exclusive private concert in a relaxed setting. An inspirational treat not to be missed! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDuring their stay\, guests will also: \n\nEnjoy access to play on our 9 grand pianos anytime between 7am and 8pm. (There are enough pianos to go round that everyone can play a piano at any given time.)\nJoin and socialise with a group 8 fellow piano enthusiasts during lunch and dinner.\nDine in style with lunches and three course dinners prepared by our fabulous chef.\nExperience the Finchcocks bubble\, hailed as a “paradise for pianists” by BBC Music Magazine and stay in a grade 1 listed country manor.\n\nPlus ones are very welcome on our courses\, with a room surcharge dependant on whether they are a playing or non-playing guest. Please ask for further details. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSteven Devine enjoys a busy career as a music director and keyboard player working with some of the finest musicians. \nHe is the Principal Keyboard Player with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and also the principal keyboard player for The Gonzaga Band\, The Mozartists and performs regularly with many other groups around Europe. He has recorded over thirty discs with other artists and ensembles and made six solo recordings. His recording of Bach’s Goldberg Variations (Chandos Records) has received critical acclaim – including Gramophone magazine describing it as “among the best”. The complete harpsichord works of Rameau (Resonus) has received five-star reviews from BBC Music Magazine. Steven has recently released  Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier (“it’s the one of all I’ve heard in the past ten years that I am happiest to live with.” Early Music Review)  – available on this site. \nHe made his London conducting debut in 2002 at the Royal Albert Hall and is now a regular performer there – including making his Proms directing debut in August 2007 with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. He has conducted the Mozart Festival Orchestra in every major concert hall in the UK and also across Switzerland. SUMMARY:5-day Advanced Summer School with Florian Mitrea
DESCRIPTION:We know advanced pianists will be absolutely delighted to have the opportunity to spend five days learning from and being inspired by the inimitable Florian Mitrea. Below\, he describes his plan for the Finchcocks 2024 summer school course for advanced pianists (beyond grade 8\, preparing for – or at – diploma standard\, or higher). \nOur 5-day courses are a well established highlight of the Finchcocks calendar. To ensure a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere\, places are open to those who have attended at least one weekend Finchcocks course previously. \n\n\n“The advanced 5-day course provides us with the ideal framework to explore music-making in all its aspects. It gives us the necessary time to discuss issues regarding the role of technique\, touch\, phrasing\, and sound production\, from both historic and contemporary perspectives. It also provides the opportunity to experiment with these in several performances\, either in a masterclass setting or in the various informal concerts\, with a goal to finding your own fresh voice with the music that you are playing. \nI will always listen to your own response to each piece and match my artistic suggestions with possible technical means to achieve them\, not in a prescriptive way\, but rather in a manner that will give you options\, which you can then explore during your practice and reach a final interpretative decision. With the already well-established format that includes masterclasses\, as well as interactive workshops and individual lessons\, I am looking forward to spending these days with you talking music all day long\, sharing what makes us all so passionate about it.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLike our weekend courses\, formal tuition takes place in workshops\, performance classes and one-to-one lessons. \n\nWorkshop 1: Posture and Performance – a crash-course in movement at the piano\nThis is all about reviewing the basic premises of our piano playing – refreshening ideas about we sit at the piano\, what the optimal height position of the piano stool might be\, and using upper body posture and strength to enhance our performance. We will be analysing how the different joints of the hands and the arms are contributing significantly to a satisfying feeling of freedom at the piano\, while also avoiding injuries and strains. You will be taking in turns trying out some very simple movement exercises\, and\, most significantly\, be prepared to wriggle your knees (you will quickly learn why this is very important)!\nWorkshop 2: It’s about time!\nMusic is an art unfolding in time. Therefore\, issues related to time are always on our minds. Let’s explore how understanding and controlling time can lead to a more satisfying performance. We will be looking at examples from various composers\, learning how each individual musical style needs a tailored approach to timing and pacing\, and we will learn how rhythms (and our approach to them) turn into artistic expression.\nWorkshop 3: Flash-fixing surgery\nDo you remember that one passage that always seem to go strangely in a performance\, no matter how hard you practise? This may be a chance to sort it out once and for all. This workshop will begin with some general ideas about why mishaps happen while we play\, distinguishing between accidents and slips which are insignificant and will not affect the overall outcome\, and more serious problems which make you nervous and don’t seem to go away. We will also be looking at some general ways in which we can avoid these problems from happening. In the second part of the course\, you will each be invited to bring a short section (it could be just a few bars)\, and I will do my best to offer practical tips and solutions to help you on your way to mastering it.\nWorkshop 4: Being in the flow\nGetting into the optimal physical and mental state for performance is a life-long process\, but there are ways in which we can learn to achieve this more quickly\, maybe even on-demand. This will be a deep exploration of what our preparation at the piano involves\, the multi-faceted aspects of our practising\, and how it all leads to the wonderful feeling of complete identification with the pieces that we are playing and our own personal sound at the piano.\nWorkshop 5: Learning through memorisation\nPlaying from memory is not necessarily historically authentic\, and it became common practice only in the late 19th century. We will first discuss why people bother playing from memory at all\, and whether it is or isn’t an important part of the performing act. More significantly though\, I will be sharing with you principles and ideas about why I believe memorisation is an important part of learning\, and how incorporating a little bit of memorisation into your learning will lead to more satisfying results in the long run\, and it can make practising feel more creative and fun.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs usual\, everyone will have access to their own grand piano for the week including our new Steinway\, and have plenty of time to practise in our vaulted piano cellar. \nWe’ll also have a bit of fun! (There are enough pianos to go round that everyone can play a piano at any given time.)\nExperience a salon-style concert performed by Florian exclusively for guests.\nHave the chance to take part in a recital on the Bosendorfer in the main hall of the family home.\nJoin and socialise with a group 8 fellow piano enthusiasts during lunch and dinner.\nDine in style with lunches and three course dinners prepared by our fabulous chef.\nExperience the Finchcocks bubble\, hailed as a “paradise for pianists” by BBC Music Magazine and stay in a grade 1 listed country manor.\n\nPlus ones are very welcome on our courses\, with a room surcharge dependant on whether they are a playing or non-playing guest. SUMMARY:Sight-reading weekend with David Hall - Upper Intermediate - Diploma
DESCRIPTION:A weekend dedicated to sight-reading which\, for the busy or practice-challenged pianist\, requires no preparation at all! \nWhy do we always talk about aural tests and sight-reading tests? Finchcocks musical director David Hall advocates a systematic approach to sight-reading that does not involve weekly high-pressure tests. He believes that sight-reading should feel more like curling up on the sofa with a good book that you’ve not read before! \nThis weekend is designed especially for Upper Intermediate players and beyond\, who want to improve – and enjoy – sight-reading at the piano. Taught by pianist and author of There’s more to playing the piano David Hall (LRSM\, FRCO)\, this course is led by one of the best sight-readers we’ve ever witnessed! \n \nEach day typically starts with a workshop in the Finchcocks recital room or around the Yamaha in our piano cellar. In the afternoons\, there is time for private practice on one of our beautiful acoustic grand pianos including our new Steinway and individual tuition from the tutor. \nMorning workshops for this course will include: \n\n\nA ten-week plan to develop your skills\n\n\nSpotting patterns\n\n\nIn the afternoon we’ll convene for a performance workshop\, which will provide practical application the morning’s learning. There is no pressure to play if you don’t feel ready\, but we aim to make the atmosphere as relaxed\, fun and encouraging as possible\, with David being known to ask a nervous player to just “play one note”! \nPerformance classes for this weekend will include: \n\nQuick study pieces – introduction\nQuick study pieces – performance\n\n \nAt 7pm on Saturday\, we have a pre-dinner talk or recital in the main hall of the family home. This is a chance for guests can sit back and relax with a glass of wine: After a full day’s concentration\, nothing beats hearing the course tutor inspiring guests with some current repertoire on the family Bosendorfer! \n \n“Extraordinary weekend piano course with the excellent David Hall. […] Very good tuition tailored to the individuals and plenty of time to focus on the piano.” ~ Shadow Tours (Google review)\n\nOn a typical weekend course\, Finchcocks guests will: \n\nHave the chance to play in and observe two performance masterclasses and two workshops.\nReceive one-to-one input from tutor David during circulation in the free practice sessions.\nEnjoy access to play on our 9 grand pianos anytime between 7am and 8pm. It’s also accessible for those who have begun a new hobby later in life! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA note from Pam: \n\n“Hello all Rusty or Not-So-Rusty pianists! \nI am very much looking forward to spending time with you next May and will hopefully help you to enhance your love of the piano. \nWhatever stage you are at\, fear not! SUMMARY:Debussy 3-day course with Paul Roberts - Upper Intermediate to Diploma - waiting list
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to be welcoming concert pianist\, writer\, lecturer\, teacher and leading authority in Debussy Paul Roberts to lead this 3-day course. \n\nPaul Roberts is an exceptional musician\, a fine and deeply sensitive pianist\, teacher and an author of the greatest distinction. His books on Debussy and Ravel are quite simply the most outstanding and perceptive I have read. ~ Bryce Morrison \n\n\nDebussy’s piano music is notable for the vividly descriptive titles he added to the pieces. How can thinking about these titles add to our understanding of the music\, and indeed to our ability to perform it? The range is wide\, from images of moonlight and water\, to slapstick entertainment and ragtime; from the songs and dances of Spain and Italy\, to humorous and touching tales of childhood; from poetry and folklore\, to the art and culture of the ancient world. In his workshops Paul Roberts will reveal Debussy’s imaginative world and explore the enigma of Debussy and impressionism.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nI applaud this generously illustrated book\, Images\, which is a significant contribution to our understanding of the literary and artistic influences on Debussy’s piano works. This is a task that few pianists would be up to. ~ Charles Timbrell \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEach day will begin with an interactive workshop\, led by Paul. Afternoons are spent exploring and enjoying each other’s repertoire\, applying new gained knowledge\, and confidence\, in performance classes – as well as some private practice! \nRepertoire suggestions are (but by no means excluded to): \nUpper Intermediate\n\nReverie\nClair de lune\nLa fille au cheveux de lin\nBruyère\nSelected pieces from Children’s Corner\n\nAdvanced and beyond\n\n\nSelected pieces from Children’s Corner\nLe sérénade interrompue\nPuerta del Vino\nSoirée dans Grenade\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn between the workshop and performance class sessions\, there will be time for private practice on one of our beautiful grand pianos. During these sessions\, Paul will give one-to-one lessons on our new Steinway to provide individual pointers and tips. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA highlight of any Finchcocks weekend is seeing our tutor in action. Guests will enjoy a private salon-style recital entitled Cross Currents of France and Spain in which Paul will also include some Spanish music by Falla and Albeniz and show how Debussy’s piano music draws on these influences. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGuests will also: \n\nHave the chance to play in and observe two performance masterclasses.\nWill receive a one-to-one lesson with Paul.\nEnjoy access to play on our 9 grand pianos anytime between 7am and 8pm. (There are enough pianos to go round that everyone can play a piano at any given time.)\nExperience a private accompanied talk for course participants in the main hall of the family home\, performed by Paul.\nJoin and socialise with a group 8 fellow piano enthusiasts during lunch and dinner.\nDine in style with lunches and three course dinners prepared by our fabulous chef.\nExperience the Finchcocks bubble\, hailed as a “paradise for pianists” by BBC Music Magazine and stay in a grade 1 listed country manor.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPianist\, writer\, lecturer\, inspiring teacher – and a leading authority on the music of Debussy and Ravel – Paul Roberts has earned the admiration of audiences\, critics and fellow professionals world wide. ‘Paul Roberts’ master classes and public lectures immerse the listeners in a magical world of images and ideas .  . . His communicative abilities\, whether as performer\, writer or teacher\, are without equal\,’  wrote Harold Gray\, the founder of Portland Piano International\, and director until his retirement in 2013. Invited every year to the summer festival of Portland Piano International since its inception in 1999\, Paul Roberts has established a unique profile in Portland\, where he regularly performs\, gives master classes and private tuition. \nIn Europe Paul Roberts is the artistic director of the international summer school for pianists Music at Chateau d’Aix\, in southern France. In July 2021\, and again in 2022\, he was invited to give a week of master classes and a lecture recitals at the International Piano Foundation Theo and Petra Lieven in Vienna. His new book Reading Franz Liszt was published in June 2022 and launched at the London Piano Festival in October\, where he gave a lecture recital on Liszt’s Petrarch Sonnets. His acclaimed Reflections: The Piano Music of Maurice Ravel (Amadeus\, 2012) followed his first two books: a biography Debussy (Phaidon\, 2008) and Images: The Piano Music of Claude Debussy (Amadeus\, 1996). Images has become a seminal text on the subject. ‘It is a complete picture of Debussy’s poetic world\,’ Richard Goode has written\, ‘and is one of the few indispensable books on music that I know.’ \nRecordings include two discs of Debussy’s piano music and his most recent Ravel & Liszt. ‘Roberts doesn’t play like an Englishman\,’ wrote a critic for BBC Music Magazine on the release of his first Debussy disc. ‘Space\, concentration and fire take their turns in this fine start to a Debussy cycle. He characterises directly and\, at speed\, fiercely. In slower music there is unhurried poise and fluidity.’ \nAmong extensive appearances throughout the United States\, Paul Roberts has been a guest of the Juilliard School in New York\, the Peabody Institute\, the Golandsky Institute\, San Francisco Conservatory of Music\, the University of Washington and Portland Piano International. He has presented at the International Keyboard Institute and Festival in New York. \n\n\n\n\nHis sensitive approach to the sublime music of Debussy and Ravel\, and his illuminating explanations of the relationship between the two composers and their music\, were utterly fascinating. Roberts seems to give each piece precisely the perspective it wants\, with particular emphasis on expressivity and clarity.. . . It was easily one of the best recitals I’ve been to this year\, and I could have listened for another hour. ~ – Brett Campbell\, Oregon Arts Watch\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor booking enquiries\, please contact us on 01580 428080 or fill in the form below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Your Name (required)\n \n \n Your Email (required)\n \n \n Which course date(s) are you interested in?\n \n \n Playing level / experience (required)\n \n \n Room price band:\nPlease selectClassic (standard)Considerable (large)Old Dairy (with own piano)\n\n \n Other room preferences: (please select most important one and we'll try to our best to accommodate)\nPlease selectEnsuiteWalk-in showerBath2nd floor3rd floorI'm easy!\n\n \n Please tell us anything else that you think would be helpful:\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	3-day courses\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	from £825 (inclusive of accommodation\, food\, wine and tuition)

Perhaps even moreso! \nDuring this weekend course\, we will compare the difference between playing to yourself and playing to other people\, and how an awareness of these inherent differences can be channelled to improve your confidence when performing. We will look at the importance of understanding how audiences hear and process musical phrases\, and explore what this means in practical terms for the performer who is navigating technically complex musical material and repertoire. We will also look at strategies that keep us focussed on what we want to communicate and how to prevent our mind wandering or suggesting that ‘we can’t do it’. Finally\, we will learn of the importance of breathing and musical ‘space’\, adding this to the performer’s toolkit to help calm nerves and allow them to project confidence. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe are very excited to welcome international concert pianist\, Steinway artist\, Professor of Academic Studies at Guildhall of Music and Drama and lecturer at the City Literary Institute Dr Maria Razumovskaya to lead this course. \n\nHer exquisite touch… authoritative grandeur\, a kaleidoscope of ever changing emotions… intense power [is] set against a sublime poetic vision ~ The Classical Reviewer \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBoth Satuday and Sunday begin with an interactive workshop\, led by Maria. This course will include:\n\n\nThe ‘flowing’ phrase: Composers and performers talk about music ‘flowing’\, but do we really know what this means?\n\n\nTo sing or speak? What kind of ‘narrative’ are we projecting from the keyboard and how does it become embedded in our playing?\n\n\nAfternoons are spent exploring and enjoying each other’s repertoire\, applying new gained knowledge\, and confidence\, in performance classes – as well as some private practice! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn between the workshop and performance class sessions\, there will be time for private practice on one of our beautiful grand pianos. During these sessions\, Maria will give one-to-one lessons on our new Steinway to provide individual pointers and tips. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGuests will also: \n\nHave the chance to play in and observe two performance masterclasses.\nWill receive a one-to-one lesson with Maria.\nEnjoy access to play on our 9 grand pianos anytime between 7am and 8pm. (There are enough pianos to go round that everyone can play a piano at any given time.)\nExperience a private accompanied talk for course participants in the main hall of the family home\, performed by Maria.\nJoin and socialise with a group 8 fellow piano enthusiasts during lunch and dinner.\nDine in style with lunches and three course dinners prepared by our fabulous chef.\nExperience the Finchcocks bubble\, hailed as a “paradise for pianists” by BBC Music Magazine and stay in a grade 1 listed country manor.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStaggeringly passionate playing. ~ Gramophone \n\n\n\nMaria Razumovskaya has been described as a ‘virtuoso story-teller of the piano’ (Le Courrier). She performs at many major international festivals and venues including the Cheltenham Festival\, Wigmore Hall\, St John’s Smith Square\, Cadogan Hall\, Holywell Room\, SJE Arts Piano International Series\, Lavaux Classique\, Zurich Stadt Kultur\, Piano City Milan\, Paris Musée d’Orsay\, Yogyakarta Philharmonia\, the Saint Petersburg Philharmonia\, and the Rachmaninov Hall and Skryabin Museum in Moscow. \nRazumovskaya’s live performances have been recorded and broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and featured as highlights in their ‘Performing Miracles’ series\, RTS\, Espace 2\, Radio Orfeo\, and ABC Radio. \nRazumovskaya’s  debut-disc recorded by Tony Faulkner on the Malachite label was shortlisted for the Liszt Disque Grand Prix\, and subsequent recordings for the label have been singled out by international publications such as Pizzicato magazine\, and critically praised for the performance’s ‘extraordinary mastery’ [American Record Guide] and ‘staggering passion and lyricism’ [Gramophone]. SUMMARY:Improvisation weekend with David Hall - Intermediate - Diploma
DESCRIPTION:A weekend devoted to exploring ideas for improvisation at the piano – which\, for the busy or practice-challenged pianist – requires no preparation. \nImprovisation is great fun in any style. In fact it used to be a mainstay of musical education. Handel\, Bach\, Mozart and many others were famous for their improvisations\, many of which were transcribed to form part of a virtuosic cadenza. Church musicians use(d) it as part of their toolbox to provide flexibility to accompanied parts of worship (for example during communion or before a service begins). Today it is seen more as a jazz speciality – and we aim to change this perception! \nThis weekend is designed especially for classical pianists (and organists) who have never tried to improvise. Aspiring or experienced jazz pianists are of course welcome too! \nThe course will be taught by our wonderful musical director\, pianist and organist David Hall (LRSM\, FRCO). \n \nEach day typically starts with a workshop in the Finchcocks recital room. In the afternoons\, there is time for private practice on one of our beautiful acoustic grand pianos including our new Steinway and individual tuition from the tutor. \nWorkshops for this weekend will include: \n\n\nMelody and Harmony – Scales and Chords\n\n\nGenerating ideas\n\n\nIn the afternoon we’ll convene for a performance workshop\, which will provide tips on how to make the nicest sounds when playing. There is no pressure to play if you don’t feel ready\, but we aim to make the atmosphere as relaxed and encouraging as possible\, with David being known to ask a nervous player to just “play one note”! \nPerformance classe for this weekend will include: \n\nGive it a go!\nExploring new styles and genres\n\nAt 7pm on Saturday\, we have a pre-dinner talk or recital in the main hall of the family home. (There are enough pianos to go round that everyone can play a piano at any given time.)\nEnjoy a private recital for course guests on Saturday evening in the main hall of Finchcocks.\nJoin and socialise with a group 8 fellow piano enthusiasts during lunch and dinner.\nDine in style with lunches and three course dinners prepared by our fabulous chef.\nExperience the Finchcocks bubble\, hailed as a “paradise for pianists” by BBC Music Magazine and stay in a grade 1 listed country manor.\n\nPlus ones are very welcome on our courses\, with a room surcharge dependant on whether they are a playing or non-playing guest. Please ask for further details. \n\n\nFor booking enquiries\, please contact Jenny on 01580 428080 or fill in the form below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Weekend courses\n\n	from £675 (inclusive of accommodation\, food\, wine and tuition)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Your Name (required)\n \n \n Your Email (required)\n \n \n Which course date(s) are you interested in?\n \n \n Playing level / experience (required)\n \n \n Room price band:\nPlease selectClassic (standard)Considerable (large)Old Dairy (with own piano)\n\n \n Other room preferences: (please select most important one and we'll try to our best to accommodate)\nPlease selectEnsuiteWalk-in showerBath2nd floor3rd floorI'm easy!\n\n \n Please tell us anything else that you think would be helpful:\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n...

SUMMARY:Exploring the Romantics weekend with Daniel Grimwood - Upper Intermediate to Diploma - waiting list
DESCRIPTION:A course devoted to the most luxurious and indulgent of piano repertoire – Exploring the Romantics! \n\nThis exciting period spans from mid-Beethoven to Rachmaninov (and beyond) and encapsulates an enormous amount of piano music. We are spoiled for choice\, as anything from a gentle John Field Nocturne or Schubert Impromptu\, to a Brahms Rhapsody\, Liszt Etude or a Rachmaninov Prelude\, will hit the spot. Romantic music brought emotional expression to the fore and saw composers making their music deliberately more expressive and descriptive\, pushing the boundaries of the piano to new heights. It is also intricately tied to musical and national identity. These qualities make the era’s music especially rewarding and exciting to play with plenty of opportunity for exploration of both musical\, cultural and political ideas of the time. \nAs broad the repertoire\, so the ability required to play it! This course suits anyone from Upper Intermediate level through to Diploma+. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBoth Satuday and Sunday begin with an interactive workshop\, led by the tutor. SUMMARY:Lower Intermediate 3-day course with David Hall - waiting list
DESCRIPTION:This 3-day course is designed for people who have made a good start at the piano and got to between grade 2 and grade 4 standard. It’s ideal for players keen to return to the piano after a gap of a few years\, or indeed for anyone practising regularly working up through the grades. \nTuition is delivered by the inimitable David Hall (FRCO\, MA Cantab)\, who is one of our most popular tutors at Finchcocks\, and was recently described by the Sunday Times when they joined us on a Finchcocks piano course\, as a “musical powerhouse”. This is him in action at one of our Saturday evening recitals in the main Hall of Finchcocks. \n \nEach day typically starts with an workshop in the Finchcocks in our vaulted cellars. This allows rapid demonstration and practice of techniques using our nine grand pianos which each have their own glass fronted practice room and surround the main atrium of the cellar. \n \nIn the afternoons\, there is time for private practice on one of our beautiful acoustic grand pianos including our new Steinway. Later in the afternoon\, we convene for a performance class\, which involves a little bit of (very relaxed) performance in front of your classmates in the recital room. At 7pm we have our pre-dinner talk or recital in the main house\, which is a chance to relax and be inspired with a glass of wine! \n \nExplore repertoire together. Learn the secrets of the Cycle of Fifths. Discover how an understanding of chords and scales can inform your performance.\n\nWorkshop: The Nuts and Bolts\nPerformance Masterclass: Bringing Your Music to Life\nWorkshop: Sight-reading is not always a test!\nPerformance Masterclass: Bringing your Music to Life\n\nIf you aren’t sure whether this is the right course for you\, or quite what your level is\, please drop Jenny a line using the form below\, or give here a ring on 01580 428080. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	3-day courses\n\n	from £825 (inclusive of accommodation\, food\, wine and tuition)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Your Name (required)\n \n \n Your Email (required)\n \n \n Which course date(s) are you interested in?\n \n \n Playing level / experience (required)\n \n \n Room price band:\nPlease selectClassic (standard)Considerable (large)Old Dairy (with own piano)\n\n \n Other room preferences: (please select most important one and we'll try to our best to accommodate)\nPlease selectEnsuiteWalk-in showerBath2nd floor3rd floorI'm easy!\n\n \n Please tell us anything else that you think would be helpful:\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n...

SUMMARY:5-day course for advanced pianists with Dr. Vedrana Subotic - waiting list
DESCRIPTION:Explore the four main eras of Western classical music with a 5-day course dedicated to the unique style and technique required to deliver a stylistically true performance in each. \nDo you love playing Chopin\, but lack confidence to play Mozart? Would you love the challenge of learning a Baroque piece when you usually stick to Beethoven? Do you want to gain a greater understanding of the bigger musical picture and how each era’s music influenced and evolved into the next? \nThis 5-day course for advanced players aims to dedicate a day to Baroque\, Classical\, Romantic and 20th Century piano music under the expert guidance of award-winning Steinway artist\, Professor-Lecturer of Music at the University of Utah\, visiting Professor of Piano at the University of Chile and President of the World Piano Teachers Association USA Dr. \nWe recommend that guests prepare 4 pieces for the performance masterclasses\, bringing with them one from each – Baroque\, Classical\, Romantic and 20th Century eras. We realise this is quite a big ask for advanced players\, given the hours of dedication needed to prepare for a performance ready piece. Performance in every masterclass is not mandatory. Even preparing a piece in private will help contextualise the workshop and open-lessons better! \n\n\nOver the course of her vibrant and multi-faceted musical career\, pianist Vedrana Subotic has distinguished herself as an internationally acclaimed concert artist\, pedagogue\, and chamber musician. \nThis will be Vedrana’s third course at Finchcocks and we can’t to welcome her back! We’ll explore the private gardens at Finchcocks\, experience a local wine tasting\, be able to go for beautiful Kentish countryside walks to Scotney castle and enjoy a session or two in the family’s new heated outdoor swimming pool\, weather and temperature permitting. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	5 day courses\n\n	from £1400 (inclusive of accommodation\, tuition and all food and wine)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Your Name (required)\n \n \n Your Email (required)\n \n \n Please tell us which course are you interested in\, your room preference(s) and a little bit about your playing experience to date:

SUMMARY:Chopin weekend with Warren Mailley-Smith - mixed ability - waiting list
DESCRIPTION:Back by very popular demand\, this will be our fifth Chopin weekend here at Finchcocks with Warren Mailley-Smith. \nChopin’s lyrical and elegant Nocturnes and Preludes are firm favourites with our intermediate and advanced players\, and so we’re very excited to announce the return of our very popular first composer-specific weekend. \nWe’re incredibly lucky to have secured the services of Warren Mailley-Smith for this course. In 2016\, Warren became the first British pianist to perform Chopin’s complete works for solo piano from memory at a series of concerts at St John Smith’s Square in London\, a feat which involved memorising 3.5 million notes! \n \nOver the course of the weekend\, Warren will explore and demonstrate both the technical aspects of playing Chopin’s music\, as well as sessions on how to perform Chopin’s music to the best of our ability. \nHe’ll explain why Chopin sounds like Chopin and show us how Chopin intended us to play his pieces. In the masterclass sessions\, we’ll look at developing phrasing and articulation\, with plenty of tips on performance and how to polish our pieces and make them sound as natural and elegant as possible. \nWorkshop titles will include: \n\nThe importance of “cantabile” in piano playing Chopin\n Tips for playing Chopin\n\nGuests will also: \n\nHave the chance to play in and observe two performance masterclasses.\nWill receive a one-to-one lesson with Warren.\nEnjoy access to play on our 9 grand pianos anytime between 7am and 8pm. (There are enough pianos to go round that everyone can play a piano at any given time.)\nExperience a private recital for course participants in the main hall of the family home\, performed by Warren.\nJoin and socialise with a group 8 fellow piano enthusiasts during lunch and dinner.\nDine in style with lunches and three course dinners prepared by our fabulous chef.\nExperience the Finchcocks bubble\, hailed as a “paradise for pianists” by BBC Music Magazine and stay in a grade 1 listed country manor.\n\nPlus ones are very welcome on our courses\, with a room surcharge dependant on whether they are a playing or non-playing guest. Please ask for further details. \n \nYou can see Warren in action at Finchcocks when he did a recording session with Classic FM recently. \nIn the evening on Saturday\, Warren will give a salon-style Chopin recital (just as Chopin would have done!) especially for course guests\, and combining music from various points in his life with a biographical commentary that will help us understand the underlying emotions found in Chopin’s music. \n \nIn between the workshop and masterclass sessions there will be time for private practice on one of our beautiful grand pianos including our new Steinway. During these sessions\, Warren will give individual lessons to guests\, offering pointers and tips on the repertoire they are working on. \n \nThe course is intended for intermediate to advanced players who are keen to bring their favourite works by Chopin to life. It might well be that there’s a prelude that you’ve been struggling with for years that you would desperately like to perfect\, or equally there might be a Waltz that you have always wanted to play\, but haven’t yet had the chance to really work on. Budding Chopin devotees\, this is your moment! \nFor booking enquiries\, please contact us on 01580 428080 or fill in the form below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Weekend courses\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	from £650 (inclusive of accommodation\, food\, wine and tuition)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Your Name (required)\n \n \n Your Email (required)\n \n \n Which course date(s) are you interested in?\n \n \n Playing level / experience (required)\n \n \n Room price band:\nPlease selectClassic (standard)Considerable (large)Old Dairy (with own piano)\n\n \n Other room preferences: (please select most important one and we'll try to our best to accommodate)\nPlease selectEnsuiteWalk-in showerBath2nd floor3rd floorI'm easy!\n\n \n Please tell us anything else that you think would be helpful:
