SUMMARY:Lower intermediate with Dave Hall - Sold Out
DESCRIPTION:This course is designed for people who have made a good start at the piano and got to between grade 2 and grade 4 standard. It’s ideal for players keen to return to the piano after a gap of a few years\, or indeed for anyone practising regularly working up through the grades. \nThis course is being run by David Hall (FRCO\, MA Cantab)\, who is one of our most popular tutors at Finchcocks\, and was recently described by the Sunday Times when they joined us on a Finchcocks piano course\, as a “musical powerhouse”. This is him in action at one of our Saturday evening recitals in the main Hall of Finchcocks. \n \nEach day typically starts with a workshop in the Finchcocks in our vaulted cellars. This allows rapid demonstration and practice of techniques using our nine grand pianos which each have their own glass fronted practice room and surround the main atrium of the cellar. \n \nIn the afternoons\, there is time for private practice on one of our beautiful acoustic grand pianos including our new Steinway. Later in the afternoon\, we convene for a masterclass\, which involves a little bit of (very relaxed) performance in front of your classmates in the recital room. At 7pm we have our pre-dinner talk or recital in the main house\, which is a chance to relax and be inspired with a glass of wine\, before returning to the Coach House for dinner. \n \nIf you aren’t sure whether this is the right course for you\, or quite what your level is\, please drop Jenny a line using the form below\, or give here a ring on 01580 428080. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Weekend courses\n\n	from £525\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Your Name (required)\n \n \n Your Email (required)\n \n \n Please tell us which course are you interested in\, your room preference(s) and a little bit about your playing experience to date:\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n...

SUMMARY:Intermediate course with Melanie Spanswick - Few places remaining
DESCRIPTION:This course is designed for people who are between grade 4 and grade 7 in standard. \nWe’re very lucky to have Melanie Spanswick as our Course Director for this weekend. Melanie is a composer\, performer and writer and has run piano courses throughout Europe\, the USA and the Far East. \n \nMelanie’s sessions will cover some of the key topics that bridge the gap between intermediate and advanced players; exploring physical technique\, developing sight-reading skills and creating a strategy for memorisation. \nPhysical flexibility is an important aspect of piano playing\, and Melanie will be exploring ways of alleviating tension and stiffness whilst developing strong fingers. This will be done via a series of simple but useful exercises\, both at and away from the instrument! \nEach day typically starts with a workshop in the Finchcocks cellars. Techniques are discussed\, demonstrated and developed with everyone encouraged to participate. No preparation is required\, and the exercises will be carefully adapted to the particular experience level of each participant. \n \nShortly afterwards\, we convene for a masterclass in the recital room\, which involves a little bit of (very relaxed) performance in front of your classmates and perhaps a duet or two. \nIn the afternoons\, there is time for private practice on one of our beautiful acoustic grand pianos including our new Steinway and with regular burst of individual supervision from Melanie. \nOn Saturday evening\, we’ll host a recital in main Hall of Finchcocks on the Bosendorfer\, which is a chance to relax and be inspired\, before returning to the Coach House for dinner. \nFor booking enquiries\, please contact Jenny on 01580 428080 or fill in the form below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Weekend courses\n\n	from £525\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Your Name (required)\n \n \n Your Email (required)\n \n \n Please tell us which course are you interested in\, your room preference(s) and a little bit about your playing experience to date:\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n...

SUMMARY:Chopin Weekend with Warren Mailley Smith - few places remaining
DESCRIPTION:Chopin’s lyrical and elegant Nocturnes and Preludes are firm favourites with our intermediate and advanced players\, and so we’re very excited to announce the return of our very popular first composer-specific weekend. \nWe’re incredibly lucky to have secured the services of Warren Mailley-Smith for this course. In 2016\, Warren became the first British pianist to perform Chopin’s complete works for solo piano from memory at a series of concerts at St John Smith’s Square in London\, a feat which involved memorising 3.5 million notes! \n \nOver the course of the weekend\, Warren will explore and demonstrate both the technical aspects of playing Chopin’s music as well as sessions on how to perform Chopin’s music to the best of our ability. \nHe’ll explain why Chopin sounds like Chopin and show us how Chopin intended us to play his pieces. In the masterclass sessions\, we’ll look at developing phrasing and articulation\, with plenty of tips on performance and how to polish our pieces and make them sound as natural and elegant as possible. \n \nYou can see Warren in action at Finchcocks when he did a recording session with Classic FM recently. \nIn the evening on Saturday\, Warren will give a talk and recital on Chopin\, combining music from various points in his life with a biographical commentary that will help us understand the underlying emotions found in Chopin’s music. \nThere can be few people in the world more qualified to talk to us about memorisation\, so Warren will also run a session on techniques for memorising pieces and how it can be useful when learning and developing your repertoire. \nIn between the workshop and masterclass sessions there will be time for private practise on one of our beautiful grand pianos including our new Steinway. During these sessions\, Warren will drop in to each of the practice rooms to provide individual pointers and tips. \n \nThe course is intended for intermediate to advanced players who are keen to bring their favourite works by Chopin to life. It might well be that there’s a prelude that you’ve been struggling with for years that you would desperately like to perfect\, or equally there might be a Waltz that you have always wanted to play\, but haven’t yet had the chance to really work on. Budding Chopin devotees\, this is your moment! \nFor booking enquiries\, please contact us on 01580 428080 or fill in the form below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Weekend courses\n\n	from £525\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Your Name (required)\n \n \n Your Email (required)\n \n \n Subject\n \n \n Your Message\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n...

SUMMARY:Dave Hall course for beginners and returners - few places remaining
DESCRIPTION:Many of us played the piano whilst at school\, but didn’t get quite as far as we’d hoped and some of us missed out entirely. \nThis course is designed for adult pianists returning to the piano after a gap of a few years (or decades!)\, and would also suit anyone who has recently taken up the piano. \nThe course will start with some basics on notation and how that corresponds to the keyboard. Then we move beyond the notes to look at some of the unwritten elements of music\, where we’ll touch upon emotions and narrative in music. We’ll also explore a variety of pieces and to help everyone pick music that’s suitable to their own particular level and musical interests. \n \nWe’ll then explore some practical theory before moving on to our very popular session on playing by ear and an introduction to jazz. \nIn the evenings\, we’ll have a recital in the main Hall with a glass of wine and explore the work of one or two composers. \n \nEach day typically starts with a workshop in the Finchcocks recital room. In the afternoons\, there is time for private practice on one of our beautiful acoustic grand pianos including our new Steinway and individual tuition from one of our teachers. In the later afternoon\, we’ll convene for a masterclass which will provide tips on how to make the nicest sounds when playing. At 7pm we have our pre-dinner talk or recital in the main house\, which is a chance to relax and be inspired\, before returning to the Coach House for dinner. \nThis course is being run by David Hall (FRCO\, MA Cantab)\, who was described as a “musical powerhouse” when the Sunday Times came to review one of his courses at Finchcocks. Inspiration and encouragement are guaranteed! \nFor booking enquiries\, please contact us on 01580 428080 or fill in the form below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Weekend courses\n\n	from £525\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Your Name (required)\n \n \n Your Email (required)\n \n \n Please tell us which course are you interested in\, your room preference(s) and a little bit about your playing experience to date:\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n...

SUMMARY:Warren Mailley-Smith - Exploring the Romantic composers - Intermediates - Long weekend - SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:The Romantic composers always feature prominently at our piano courses at Finchcocks. So we’ve designed a course that helps intermediate players access a wealth of beautiful piano repertoire from some of world’s most inspiring composers over a three day long weekend course on Friday 5 July to Sunday 7 July. \nWe’re incredibly lucky to have secured the services of Warren Mailley-Smith for this course. In 2016\, Warren became the first British pianist to perform Chopin’s complete works for solo piano from memory at a series of concerts at St John Smith’s Square in London. Warren also features regularly on Classic FM\, and has played in Wigmore Hall\, Carnegie Hall as well as having performed for the British Royal Family on numerous occasions. \nThis course will explore the work and styles of five major romantic composers: Chopin\, Liszt\, Brahms\, Schumann and Schubert; with Warren doing a talk and analysis on each of these composers over a three-day course. \n \nIn each session\, Warren will discuss the styles and characteristics of the each of the composers\, help discover new repertoire and furnish participants with techniques to tackle the music of each composer. \nThere will also be an opportunity for each participant to play one or two pieces (ideally composed by one of our five romantic composers) that they have been working on in advance of the course. These pieces don’t have to concert ready – it’s perfectly acceptable to bring pieces that are partially prepared\, where guidance is need on particularly tricky parts. During these sessions\, Warren will look at developing phrasing and articulation\, with plenty of tips on performance and how to polish our pieces and make them sound as natural and elegant as possible. \nIn the evening on Saturday\, Warren will give a talk and recital on our five romantic composers\, providing a biographical and historical commentary of the romantic movement through to Debussy and the beginnings of the impressionist movement. \n \nIn between the seminars and masterclass sessions there will be time for private practise on one of our beautiful grand pianos including our new Steinway. During these sessions\, Warren will drop in to each of the practice rooms to provide individual pointers and tips. \nThe course is intended for intermediate players who are keen to bring their favourite repertoire to life. It might well be that there’s a Chopin prelude that you’ve been struggling with for years that you would desperately like to perfect\, or equally there might be Schubert Impromtu that you have always wanted to play\, but haven’t yet had the chance to really work on. Or you might just be looking for inspiration – recommendations of pieces that are suitable to your ability level – or from composers that you particularly love. \nEither way\, the chance to spend a long weekend immersed in the music of the world’s most inspiring composers is not to be missed. \nFor booking enquiries\, please contact us on 01580 428080 or fill in the form below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Weekend courses\n\n	from £575\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Your Name (required)\n \n \n Your Email (required)\n \n \n Subject\n \n \n Your Message\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n...

SUMMARY:Melanie Spanswick Intermediate course - TWO PLACES LEFT
\nAt 7pm we’re very lucky to have secured the services of Jong-Gyung Park and Anthony Zerpa-Falcon who will be playing an except from Holst’s own arrangement of the Planet Suite arranged for four hands\, which is a chance to relax and be inspired\, before returning to the Coach House for dinner. \nFor booking enquiries\, please contact Emma on 01580 428080 or fill in the form below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Weekend courses\n\n	from £475\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Your Name (required)\n \n \n Your Email (required)\n \n \n Please tell us which course are you interested in\, your room preference(s) and a little bit about your playing experience to date:\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n...

SUMMARY:Lower intermediate course with Dave Hall - ONE PLACE LEFT
\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Weekend courses\n\n	from £475\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Your Name (required)\n \n \n Your Email (required)\n \n \n Please tell us which course are you interested in\, your room preference(s) and a little bit about your playing experience to date:\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n...

SUMMARY:Beginner weekend with David Hall - ONLY ONE PLACE LEFT
DESCRIPTION:This course assumes no prior knowledge\, and is suitable for absolute beginners or players who didn’t get very far with their studies and have forgotten whatever they knew! \nThe course will start with some basics on notation and how that corresponds to the keyboard. Then we move beyond the notes to look at some of the unwritten elements of music\, where we’ll touch upon emotions and narrative in music. \nWe’ll then explore some practical theory before moving on to our very popular session on playing by ear and an introduction to jazz. \nIn the evenings\, we’ll have a recital\, explore the work of one or two composers\, as well as finding out a bit more about the history of Finchcocks. \nEach day typically starts with a workshop in the Finchcocks cellars. SUMMARY:Chopin weekend with Warren Mailley-Smith - SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:Chopin’s lyrical and elegant Nocturnes and Preludes are firm favourites with our intermediate and advanced players\, and so we’re very excited to announce our first ever composer-specific weekend. \nIn the evening on Saturday\, Warren will give a talk and recital on Chopin\, combining music from various points in his life with a biographical commentary that will help us understand the underlying emotions found in Chopin’s music. \n \nThere can be few people in the world more qualified to talk to us about memorisation\, so Warren (pictured here at a recording session with Classic FM) will also run a session on techniques for memorising pieces and how it can be useful when learning and developing your repertoire. \nIn between the workshop and masterclass sessions there will be time for private practise on one of our beautiful grand pianos. During these sessions\, Warren will drop in to each of the practice rooms to provide individual pointers and tips. \nThe course is intended for intermediate to advanced players who are keen to bring their favourite works by Chopin to life. It might well be that there’s a prelude that you’ve been struggling with for years that you would desperately like to perfect\, or equally there might be a Waltz that you have always wanted to play\, but haven’t yet had the chance to really work on. Budding Chopin devotees\, this is your moment! \nThis course has now sold out\, but Warren’s next weekend course in July has just been released and focuses on the music of Debussy and the Romantics. This course is expected to sell out\, so please book early to avoid disappointment. \nFor booking enquiries\, please contact us on 01580 428080 or fill in the form below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Weekend courses\n\n	from £475\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Your Name (required)\n \n \n Your Email (required)\n \n \n Subject\n \n \n Your Message\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n...

SUMMARY:3 day advanced course with Graham Fitch\, Lucinda Mackworth Young and Dave Hall - TWO PLACES LEFT
DESCRIPTION:THREE DAY ADVANCED COURSE \nWe’re very lucky to have secured the services of three of the most talented and engaging piano teachers in the land\, for our first ever three day course for advanced players. \nGraham Fitch\, will be opening the course with his incredibly useful insights into practice strategies. Graham makes the point that the way to progress as quickly as possible is not just to practice more\, but more importantly\, it is to practice more effectively. Graham has a huge social media following\, and will be serving up his hugely popular tips on practising and advanced technique throughout the course. \nWe’ve yet to meet anyone who doesn’t suffer from some nervousness before they play in front of a group\, and for many of us\, the anxiety we feel when we play in front of others can render our pieces unrecognisable! Lucinda Mackworth-Young is an internationally recognised authority on the psychology of performance\, helping both professional and amateur musicians conquer their nerves and play to the best of their abilities. \nWhen we recently surveyed nearly 400 advanced pianists\, more than half of them said one of their key developmental priorities was to improve their skills of improvisation. And it’s amazing how many very good pianists sit in front of the piano and can’t play a single note unless they have music in front of them. Lucinda has designed a session to tackle this head on and get you playing without your books. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDave Hall was recently described by the Sunday Times as a “a musical powerhouse… swing\, jazz\, funk – there’s no style he can’t nail”. He’s also a fellow of the Royal College of Organists\, so his baroque is not too shabby either. Dave will be running a session designed to introduce classical players to jazz\, and another session on methods for improving sight-reading. \nDave and Graham will also be running masterclass sessions on repertoire\, and for anyone interested in taking exams (or indeed teaching students taking exams)\, we’ll be running a session on how examiners mark exams and how to get a distinction. \nThis course is designed for people who have reached an advanced level (grade 7+) standard and are actively playing. Piano teachers and people studying towards diplomas are most welcome\, and will find this course particularly useful. In addition to our group sessions\, there is time for private practice on one of our beautiful acoustic grand pianos and everyone will have the opportunity to take a 30 minute individual consultation from one of our three magnificent teachers. \nThis course is being run by Graham Fitch\, Dave Hall and Lucinda Mackworth-Young \nFor booking enquiries\, please contact Emma on 01580 428080 or fill in the form below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Three day course\n\n	from £650\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Your Name (required)\n \n \n Your Email (required)\n \n \n Please tell us which course are you interested in\, your room preference(s) and a little bit about your playing experience to date:\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n...

Everyone will be asked in advance to provide a list of their chosen repertoire to encourage collaboration between course participants. \nIn addition to masterclasses\, Andrew will provide 30 minutes of individual coaching to each attendee. During these sessions\, participants may wish to tackle areas of technical weakness\, explore further repertoire they are working on or focus on material covered in the workshops. \nEach attendee will have the use of their own grand piano for the weekend\, with food cooked by our in-house chef and with spacious accommodation in our grade 2 listed Coach house with panoramic views of the Finchcocks estate. \nFor booking enquiries\, please contact Emma on 01580 428080 or fill in the form below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Weekend courses\n\n	from £475\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Your Name (required)\n \n \n Your Email (required)\n \n \n Subject\n \n \n Your Message\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n...

SUMMARY:Intermediate Weekend with Melanie Spanswick - ONLY ONE PLACE LEFT
\nShortly afterwards\, we convene for a masterclass\, which involves a little bit of (very relaxed) performance in front of your classmates and perhaps a duet or two. \nIn the afternoons\, there is time for private practice on one of our beautiful acoustic grand pianos and with regular burst of individual supervision from Melanie. \nAt 7pm we have our pre-dinner talk or recital\, which is a chance to relax and be inspired\, before returning to the Coach House for dinner. \nFor booking enquiries\, please contact Emma on 01580 428080 or fill in the form below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Weekend courses\n\n	from £475\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Your Name (required)\n \n \n Your Email (required)\n \n \n Please tell us which course are you interested in\, your room preference(s) and a little bit about your playing experience to date:\n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n...

SUMMARY:One day workshop for piano teachers - ONLY FEW PLACES REMAINING
DESCRIPTION:“How to help your students achieve their full potential in exams”\nDesigned to coincide with the new ABRSM piano syllabus\, we’re very excited to announce our first one-day workshop for piano teachers aimed specifically at teachers wanting to help their students achieve top marks in ABRSM exams to be held on Thursday 25th October: 9.30am – 4.30pm \nMasterclass: Grade 5 and Grade 8\nDavid Hall (MA Cantab FRCO)\, our musical director at Finchcocks\, will be exploring the new ABRSM repertoire for grade 5 and grade 8 pieces. He’ll talk through which pieces might suit which types of students\, provide an analysis of likely pitfalls\, and help identify teaching techniques to counter them. He’ll also pick out a couple of his recommendations from the alternative lists that aren’t provided in the standard repertoire books. \nWorkshop: How to teach sight-reading and aural skills\nOften a source of anxiety amongst students\, aural skills and sight-reading skills are a key component of ABRSM exams and can make the difference between a pass and fail\, or a merit and a distinction. Drawing on more than 2 decades of choral experience\, David will run through teaching techniques that help build confidence in these areas\, and integrate naturally into the weekly routine. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSeminar: How examiners mark exams and Mock exam\nNigel Scaife\, a former ABRSM examiner\, will outline the framework used by examiners and discuss the key considerations when assessing pieces and scales. Nigel will then give attendees the chance to assess a mock exam for themselves\, after which we’ll compare notes and calibrate the results against Nigel’s own assessment. \nWe’ll be supplying willing candidates for the mock exam\, so rest assured that none of our course participants will be asked to perform! \nCost of the tickets is £60 which includes lunch\, coffee and cake. \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Your Name (required)\n \n \n Your Email (required)\n \n \n Subject\n \n \n Your Message

SUMMARY:Jazz and Improvisation weekend with Dr Mark Polishook - ONE PLACE LEFT
DESCRIPTION:The jazz workshop sessions that we run as part of our upper intermediate courses\, got such good reviews that we’re delighted to announce that we’ll be adding two weekend courses that focus exclusively on jazz and improvisation. \nDr Mark Polishook\, who hails from NYC\, is running both of our jazz courses and knows the international jazz scene like no-one else. Growing up in New York in the 1970s\, Mark’s interest in jazz led him to meet many of the jazz legends at a time when Louis Armstrong and Miles Davis were at the height of their fame. His inspiration as a teacher comes from the idea of of passing on the wisdom of the great players of the past to today’s aspiring jazz pianists\, and doing so in a way that is engaging\, accessible and inspiring. \n \nA lot of us grew up with system of ABRSM piano exams with a focus on classical and romantic composers\, and for many the world of jazz and improvisation is as mysterious as it is intriguing. Mark uses a combination of workshops and seminars to help pass on the wisdom of the jazz masters of the past to the jazz enthusiasts of the future. \nAs with all of our weekend courses\, there is plenty of time for private practice on one of our beautiful acoustic grand pianos. David will allocate pairs\, and this is a chance to boost your confidence when performing by dividing the nerves by two! \n \nIn between David’s sessions\, there is time for private practice on one of our beautiful acoustic grand pianos and Dave will drop in regularly to see how you are getting on. We have a large range of music available to borrow during the courses\, and its a lot of fun to rummage through and test out your sight reading. \nThis course is designed for people who have reached a good (grade 4 – 8) standard\, but might well be a bit rusty. For anyone who doesn’t have access to a piano\, you’re welcome to come a bit earlier on Friday and dust off the cobwebs before everyone else arrives. \nThis course is being run by David Hall (FRCO\, MA Cantab). \nFor booking enquiries\, please contact Emma on 01580 428080 or fill in the form below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Weekend courses\n\n	from £475\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n[cmsmasters_contact_form_sc formname="164" email="neil@finchcocks.com" fromname="wordpress"]\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n...
