DESCRIPTION:The Versatile Pianist returns to Finchcocks with virtuoso pianist and composer Pavel Timofeyevsky.  \nDesigned for pianists with a broad range of interests and repertoire\, the course welcomes everything from Bach\, Haydn and Beethoven to Liszt\, Brahms\, Tchaikovsky Debussy\, Gershwin\, Ravel\, Prokofiev and beyond. Drawing on Pavel Timofeyevsky’s experience as a soloist\, chamber musician\, lecturer and artistic director of concert series and festivals\, the course will explore not only technical and musical questions but also interpretation\, communication\, stylistic awareness and performance craft. We hope that participants will develop a deeper understanding of their repertoire\, gain practical tools for more confident performances\, and discover fresh perspectives that can be applied across a wide variety of musical styles. \nCovering a broad range of piano repertoire\, two interactive workshops\, two performance classes and a one-to-one lesson\, this course for upper intermediates – advanced players is not to be missed. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe’re delighted to welcome Pavel back to Finchcocks. A virtuoso pianist\, composer for film and the concert stage\, arranger and lecturer\, Pavel Timofeyevsky has received numerous prizes and accolades\, including the BBC/Guardian Young Composer of the Year award – and has appeared at nearly all the major concert venues across the UK. \nFor this weekend he shares his wealth of knowledge\, skill and experience with you and just a small group of 8 piano enthusiasts! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Versatile Pianist weekend will follow our usual format\, incorporating an interactive workshop on both Saturday and Sunday mornings. \nTime Travel at the Piano \nWhy should a Schubert sonata sound different from a Brahms intermezzo\, and why does Debussy demand a fundamentally different palette from Prokofiev? This workshop explores how changing musical styles\, aesthetics and instruments shaped the way composers imagined sound. Through demonstrations and discussion\, we will examine how touch\, articulation\, pedalling\, phrasing and tone production evolve across different periods\, and how knowledge of historical context can enrich modern performance. \nThe Musical Doctor  \n(Solving Technical Problems Through Musical Means)  \nMany technical difficulties arise not from the fingers but from an unclear musical intention. In this interactive workshop\, participants are invited to bring passages that have long frustrated them; awkward runs\, leaps\, voicing challenges\, memory slips\, tension\, unevenness or other recurring problems. Together we will diagnose these issues and explore solutions that begin with the music itself rather than purely mechanical exercises. By connecting technique to imagination\, character and musical purpose\, we will discover how artistic clarity can often unlock technical freedom and transform both practice and performance. \nTwo additional performance classes will give participants the opportunity to apply these insights in a supportive and inspiring setting. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAfter these\, time will be spent in private practice\, one-to-one tuition with Pavel – or an open lesson performance class in our Steinway recital room. Repertoire is completely open to personal preference\, spanning from late baroque right through to 20th century! You may wish to stick to a genre – or bring two constrasting eras for comparison. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe highlight of a weekend course is often our Saturday evening tutor recital talk. Pavel will treat guests to a recital-talk on Moscow vs St Petersburg: Roots. Rivalry. Revolution. It is such a treat to sit in the main Finchcocks hall of the family home and listen to a private salon concert and it really does fit the description of an “extraordinary” and special occasion! \nMoscow vs St Petersburg: Roots. Rivalry. Revolution\n\nMusic by Tchaikovsky\, Rachmaninoff\, Mussorgsky\, Scriabin & Prokofiev\n\nIn St Petersburg\, the self-taught composers of the Mighty Handful rejected western academic training\, seeking a new\, distinctly Russian voice – rooted in folklore\, speech\, and exoticism of the empire. Mussorgsky pushed music toward raw realism\, bending the conventions of harmony and form to mirror the rhythms of language itself. \nIn Moscow\, the Conservatory fostered a more cosmopolitan ideal. Tchaikovsky\, trained in St Petersburg but launched in Moscow under Nikolai Rubinstein found there both refuge and recognition\, away from the aesthetic battles of the imperial capital. \nAcross these worlds emerged striking contrasts: \n\nNationalism vs internationalism\nExperiment vs structure\nMyth\, folklore\, and ritual vs western symphonic tradition\n\nA paradox unfolds: \nSt Petersburg\, the “window to Europe\,” turned inward for inspiration\, while Moscow\, the old eastern capital\, produced composers most fluent in Western forms. \nFrom the emotional grandeur of Rachmaninoff to the mysticism of Scriabin\, and the modernist fire of Prokofiev\, this rivalry would ultimately reshape music far beyond Russia. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn this weekend course\, guests will: \n\nHave the chance to play in and observe two performance masterclasses.\nWill receive a one-to-one lesson with Pavel.\nEnjoy access to play on our 9 grand pianos anytime between 7am and 8pm. Audiences and press alike praise his playing for its\n“shimmering undertones\, transient reality and sunlit rays full of rapturous colours” (Pulse UK).\nPavel has performed at major concert venues in UK and worldwide which include the Royal\nFestival Hall\, Wigmore Hall\, Cadogan Hall\, Queen Elizabeth Hall\, Shanghai Oriental Centre for\nArts\, Mumbai National Centre for Performing Arts\, Guangzhou Opera House and the Linder\nAuditorium in Johannesburg. His New York debut at the renowned Merkin Hall at the Kaufman\nCenter has brought him invitations to debut in Italy (Florence)\, as well as tours in Kenya and South\nAfrica. Recent highlights include performing with the Hollywood Chamber Orchestra at the Fred\nKavli Theatre in Los Angeles. \nPavel is a sought-after composer. Winner of the BBC/Guardian Young Composer of the Year Award\,\nhe recently conducted a world premiere of his new work for orchestra at London’s Cadogan Hall.\nHe has composed music for several films and animation and has recorded the soundtrack and\nstarred in the US documentary “Tchaikovsky”. \nPavel is the Artistic Director of Philomel Creative Circle\, a concert series in London in residence at\nthe Francis Crick Institute and in St Cuthbert’s Church\, Earl’s Court. SUMMARY:Don’t play Beethoven: Exploring the piano legacy of Beethoven with Dr Maria Razumovskaya - Upper Intermediate - Advanced
DESCRIPTION:In this anniversary year marking 200 years since his death\, this course engages with piano works that have come about as a response to Beethoven’s legacy.  \nBeethoven changed the musical landscape in a way that no other composer could have done before him. The Romantic era nourished itself on the myth that Beethoven’s genius towered above all others\, and the Romantics staked their values in the enigmatic claim that Beethoven’s spirit would be reborn in a worthy successor.  \nNevertheless\, nineteenth century composers still found – and continue to find – themselves setting down their paths under the shadow of Beethoven’s reputation and stature. Performers too have grappled with this legacy by questioning themselves whether they can be being considered worthy enough to play the weight of Beethoven’s music: from the celestial radiance and intimate profundity of the late works that arose from his deafness\, the heroic voice of freedom\, to the wit\, virtuosity and innovative craft. \nThis course encourages the exploration of lesser-known figures such as: \n\nDorothea von Ertmann\, one of Beethoven’s most impactful students\nLouise Farrenc\, a champion of Beethoven’s late piano sonatas\nMarie Jaël\, the first pianist to perform all Beethoven’s sonatas in Paris\nEmilie Mayer\, who earned the nickname of the ‘Female Beethoven’\nor the more-known Fanny Hensel (nee Mendelssohn)\, Clara Schumann\, and Ethel Smyth.\n\nRobert Schumann\, Franz Liszt\, Johannes Brahms\, Hans von Bülow\, Anton Rubinstein\, Alexander Siloti\, Sergei Taneyev\, Leos Janáček\, Edward Elgar\, Dmitri Shostakovich are inconceivable without reference to Beethoven. And even those who had a difficult relationship with Beethoven – such as Franz Schubert\, Fryderyk Chopin\, and Claude Debussy – still had to grapple with his titanic legacy. \nBy the end of the course participant will have a deeper appreciation of the reasons why the legend behind Beethoven gave rise to so much awe-inspiring creativity\, and tested the resolve and imagination of so many generations of pianists. Participants will come away with new repertoire ideas\, and develop efficient approaches to technique and practice to unlock the story-telling and character of those works. This course will include:\n\nAfter Beethoven: Aspiring to be an Heir and Successor \nThis session looks at the building of Beethoven into a legend\, and what fanned the flames of the race to be accepted as his successor. Musical examples and excerpts of composers\, as well as a glimpse into the lives of pianists trying to make their careers as performers\, will be explored in the context of their lives and times.Workshop 2: \nAfter Beethoven: Wrestling with Gods  \nThis session looks at the other end of the spectrum\, at the pianists and composers whose creativity was sparked by the desire to become the anti-Beethoven. This is still an important part of Beethoven’s legacy\, albeit in reverse. What did that mean in actual pianist terms? Does their inner world and struggle with being born after Beethoven open new directions\, or place them on the direct path back towards him? \n\nAfternoons are spent exploring and enjoying each other’s repertoire\, applying new gained knowledge\, and confidence\, in performance classes – as well as some private practice! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn between the workshop and performance class sessions\, there will be time for private practice on one of our beautiful grand pianos. She performs at many major international festivals and venues including the Cheltenham Festival\, Wigmore Hall\, St John’s Smith Square\, Cadogan Hall\, Holywell Room\, SJE Arts Piano International Series\, Lavaux Classique\, Zurich Stadt Kultur\, Piano City Milan\, Paris Musée d’Orsay\, Yogyakarta Philharmonia\, the Saint Petersburg Philharmonia\, and the Rachmaninov Hall and Skryabin Museum in Moscow. \nRazumovskaya’s live performances have been recorded and broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and featured as highlights in their ‘Performing Miracles’ series\, RTS\, Espace 2\, Radio Orfeo\, and ABC Radio. \nRazumovskaya’s  debut-disc recorded by Tony Faulkner on the Malachite label was shortlisted for the Liszt Disque Grand Prix\, and subsequent recordings for the label have been singled out by international publications such as Pizzicato magazine\, and critically praised for the performance’s ‘extraordinary mastery’ [American Record Guide] and ‘staggering passion and lyricism’ [Gramophone]. Further recordings including the works of Busoni\, Liszt\, CPE Bach and Rachmaninov; Tchaikovsky and Mussorgsky. \nChamber music partners include Faina Lushtak\, Ilan Schneider\, Wolfram Christ\, the Alban Berg Quartet\, principals of the Berlin Philharmonic\, Lucerne Festival Orchestra\, Luxembourg Philharmonia\, Basel Philharmonic\, National Opera Orchestra of Paris\, and soloists of the Mariinsky Opera\, Bolshoi Opera\, and Metropolitan Opera. Visionary founder of Piano-Yoga®\, the mixed ability 3-day course will introduce you to her pioneering method combining classical piano technique with yoga and mindfulness. \nGéNIA is a graduate of the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and Trinity College of Music. She has performed at major venues including Wigmore Hall\, the Barbican and Southbank Centre and her compositions have featured in productions including Killing Eve and Cold Feet. Through Piano-Yoga®\, her teaching\, masterclasses and performance coaching\, GéNIA has become a leading voice in helping pianists and performers develop greater technical freedom\, confidence\, wellbeing and expressive ease. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“It really does work.” Nadia Lasserson\, Piano Professional \n\nRecently featured in Pianist magazine and podcast\, Piano-Yoga® is a specialist piano technique that combines the principles of classical piano training with those of Eastern philosophies\, particularly yoga. Through the holistic Piano-Yoga® method\, pianists learn to develop their technique in harmony with their own physique and mindset\, working with their natural strengths and limitations\, rather than struggling against them. \nParticipants will spend three days with concert pianist GéNIA\, who is also a qualified British Wheel of Yoga teacher\, exploring the Piano-Yoga® method through three interactive workshops\, individual tuition and masterclasses. Together they will discover how piano technique develops through a deeper understanding of the body\, including posture\, alignment\, movement\, gravity\, breathing and the effective use of the hands. The method also offers a carefully structured approach to developing strength\, flexibility and control\, while enabling pianists to increase their hand span safely. \nThis teaching will enable participants to apply the principles of Piano-Yoga® directly to their own playing and repertoire. Transform Your Hands: The Core Piano-Yoga® Workshop \nThis workshop presents the core principles of Piano-Yoga®\, as developed in GéNIA’s award-winning book Piano-Yoga®: Transform Your Hands. \nThe method was born out of necessity when GéNIA set herself the challenge of performing Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini and encountered the natural physical limitations of her own hands. Determined to find a solution\, she began exploring how she could safely increase her hand span while making her fingers stronger. What started as a personal search evolved into an approach that enabled her to overcome these limitations and perform the work with greater freedom and ease. Breathing in Piano Playing – Myth versus Reality \nShould pianists think about their breathing at all\, or is it something that should simply happen naturally? \nBreathing is one of the most fundamental aspects of our existence—without breath\, there is no life. Yet it is surprising how many pianists unconsciously hold their breath or breathe inefficiently while playing\, creating unnecessary tension that can directly affect their technique\, freedom of movement and musical expression. \nDrawing on principles from both Piano-Yoga® and yoga practice\, this workshop explores how conscious breathing can become an essential technical tool in piano playing. Participants will discover how efficient breathing can improve coordination\, timing and freedom of movement\, making technical challenges such as wide stretches\, jumps\, chord playing and rapid passagework feel more natural and secure. Playing the Music of Frédéric Chopin \nThe music of Frédéric Chopin demands not only technical mastery but also an exceptional sensitivity to touch\, tone and expression. Through the principles of Piano-Yoga®\, participants will discover how a more efficient relationship between the body and the piano can unlock greater freedom of movement and a wider expressive range. \nUsing selected works by Chopin\, GéNIA will demonstrate how the Piano-Yoga® method can help pianists refine different types of touch and articulation\, develop a singing cantabile tone\, achieve effortless legato\, shape expressive phrasing\, and produce subtle changes in dynamics with greater control.
