Being the Programme Director for Finchcocks, means I get to interact with guests in the lead up to – and after a course – as much as during them! One of the highlights of my email correspondence is the lovely feedback I receive about the Finchcocks team and our courses from those who have experienced them.
You can read them on Google too, but I thought I’d share some recent ones here! Our courses really are a labour of love so it means a lot to hear you enjoy them…
My first visit to Finchcocks was fabulous. From the moment of arrival on Friday evening with Champagne reception to the lift to the station on Sunday afternoon when leaving, everything was perfect. Previous course attendees have written about the Finchcock ‘bubble’ and this an accurate description.
I have to admit, on the journey down to Kent, I felt nervous, not least, about the performance aspect of the course, but once the weekend started the nerves disappeared because it was clear from the start that it was going to be a very supportive environment.
Our course leader was superb. He was highly knowledgable, empathic and had that great ability that experts have of making difficult things manageable. I found it invaluable to have the time and space to reflect over the weekend on my current practice methods and revise them and am certain that I will reap the benefits for a considerable time to come. ~ Jacqueline Holland
Finchcocks is nothing short of a refuge and oasis for pianists; a place where music, beauty, and deep artistic growth converge in the most soul-nourishing way imaginable. I’ve traveled across the globe, from New York City and from my home in Hawaii, to attend the incomparable piano retreat at Finchcocks, studying alongside the exceptional Graham Fitch. In truth, I’d travel from Mars if that’s what it took to work with Graham in this extraordinary environment.
Graham Fitch’s teaching is simply par excellence. His profound pedagogical insight, clarity of communication, and unwavering support make him one of the most gifted piano educators I’ve ever encountered. He meets each pianist exactly where they are and gently guides them forward with both warmth and precision. Every class is rich with technical gems and musical inspiration.
But Finchcocks is more than a venue. It’s an experience made unforgettable by the incredible team behind it. Jenny Maslin, the ever-gracious and supremely organized administrator, is a beacon of warmth and efficiency. She makes sure every detail is seamless, allowing guests to focus completely on their playing and growth. As a singer and instrumentalist she understands the needs of a musician and is there to support each individual in a remarkable capacity.
And then there are the magnificent hosts and owners, Neil and Harriet Nichols, whose generosity of spirit is evident in everything they do. Their commitment to creating a welcoming, nurturing, and exquisitely comfortable environment makes Finchcocks feel like a home away from home. From the lovingly restored manor to the stunning views and sublime meals, every moment here is touched with care and intention. I won’t say much about the food and dining experience nor the accommodations except to say that you will not be disappointed. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Prepare to be overwhelmed by the beauty of your surroundings (in and outside of the 300 year old manor) as well as disarmed by the ever talented and charming chef Mark whose carefully curated delicious dinners nourished us each and every evening – not to mention the incredible lunches and healthy breakfast to get us started.
Whether you are a seasoned pianist or a passionate amateur, Finchcocks is a rare and beautiful sanctuary – a place where artistry is nurtured, friendships are forged, and inspiration runs deep. I cannot recommend more highly the retreat at Finchcocks, especially the course with Graham Fitch. Both are truly among the finest experiences a pianist could ask for. ~ Blair Boone-Migura
I thought the weekend was really well structured and there was a nice balance between activities and free/practice time. The candle lit suppers were wonderful and the recital was fantastic. The workshops and the lessons were incredibly useful – Florian was amazing! And Neil and Harriet were so lovely and welcoming. It’s really difficult to think of anything to improve on. ~ B. Finchcocks is a pianist’s dream. Expert tailored tuition on an individual and masterclass basis amongst a small group of students matched at their level of ability. With a quality grand piano for each student to practice on individually, immersion in the enjoyment of the piano comes naturally… it feels like you’re in a Conservatoire…
Exceptionally high quality accommodation, private chef and superb attention to every detail makes it an unforgettable experience. ~ Julian Hemper
So if you’ve been toying with the idea of signing up for a course, I hope these beautiful comments give you the confidence to experience the magic yourself! I look forward to hearing from you.
