This course is designed for people who are now confident in the basics of the piano, want to deepen learning before trying an Upper Intermediate course or grade, and who are between or around grades 4 and 6 standard. It’s ideal for players keen to return to the piano after a gap of a few years, or indeed for anyone practising regularly working up through the grades.
This course is being run by David Hall (FRCO, MA Cantab), who is one of our most popular tutors at Finchcocks, and was recently described by the Sunday Times when they joined us on a Finchcocks piano course, as a “musical powerhouse”. This is him in action at one of our Saturday evening recitals in the main Hall of Finchcocks.
To get a feel for some of the topics and themes covered on the weeks, as well as David’s teaching style, you can dip into some of his free Finchcocks Intermediate lessons here.
Each day typically starts with a workshop in the Finchcocks in our vaulted cellars. This allows rapid demonstration and practice of techniques using our nine grand pianos which each have their own glass fronted practice room and surround the main atrium of the cellar.
In the afternoons, there is time for private practice on one of our beautiful acoustic grand pianos including our new Steinway. Later in the afternoon, we convene for a masterclass, which involves a little bit of (very relaxed) performance in front of your classmates in the recital room. At 7pm we have our pre-dinner talk or recital in the main house, which is a chance to relax and be inspired with a glass of wine before dinner.
